Copa Tokei 🥋

Highlights from one of the blue belt matches at our in-house competition last weekend.

Such a great opportunity for our players to learn under pressure and support our teammates. A great performance from both competitors.

Photos from Tokei Judo and BJJ's post 09/06/2026

On 6 June we held the first Copa Tokei, our in-house BJJ competition.

Three matches. Zero injuries. Lots of good Jiu-Jitsu, great sportsmanship, and plenty of smiles.

The goal was simple: give our students a chance to experience competition in a friendly, supportive environment. Everyone stepped up, tested themselves, and represented the club brilliantly.

A big thank you to everyone who took part and helped make it a success. Looking forward to the next one.

In this video, we introduce the basics of falling and how we build confidence on the mats from day one.

Before learning how to throw or sweep, we learn how to land.

A quiet class today because of the bank holiday meant we got to focus on the individuals. Lots of work on our own techniques and even had time to sneak a small grading in.

Congratulations Ake on receiving your 1st Kyu. Time to start collecting those points 🥋🙌🌟

Technique Tuesday 🥋 Judo focus

This week we’re looking at Korean Tai Otoshi.

This is a single sided variation of the traditional Tai Otoshi that places a strong emphasis on forward kuzushi and commitment to the throw. By driving your partner’s balance forward and across, you take away their ability to recover their base. It’s important to notice that the second hand is used more for propulsion and direction than gripping.

From there, the rotation of the upper body combined with the drop creates the off-balance needed to complete the throw.

As with most Judo techniques, it’s not about forcing the movement, but about guiding your partner into a position where the throw becomes inevitable.
