"Smash it and own it!" — 2014 Rugby World Cup Winner & 7x Six Nations Champion Maggie Alphonsi MBE sends a special message to our T20 champions, the Ikorodu Queens! 🏉🏏

07/10/2026

An unbelievable surprise for the Ikorodu Queens today! Rugby World Cup winner and true sporting trailblazer Maggie Alphonsi MBE () took a moment to send this powerful, personal message directly to the squad.
Her words are exactly what championship mentalities are built on: never stop believing, own your space, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The Queens are making an impact far beyond the boundary in Lagos, and having an international icon like Maggie recognize that journey is massive.
Keep enjoying your cricket, Queens! 🏏🇳🇬

I was incredibly honored that Open Learning Cricket Academy was invited to today's PCA 'Cricket Meets Rugby' event as a guest of the brilliant Donna Fraser.

It was an absolute privilege to sit down and chat with Maggie Alphonsi MBE. For anyone who might not know her resume, Maggie is an absolute titan of the game: a 2014 Rugby World Cup winner, 74 caps for England, a driving force behind seven consecutive Six Nations titles, and a Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year. She is a true trailblazer who completely redefined her sport.

What truly stands out about Maggie, beyond the trophies and caps, is her champion attitude. Listening to her story firsthand was deeply inspiring, but what spoke volumes about her character was what she did next. She took the time to record a personal, highly motivating video message directly for my squad in Nigeria, the Ikorodu Queens—our newly crowned T20 champions!

Whether developing youth talent in cricket, rugby, or football, the core principles of building resilient, inclusive sporting pathways remain exactly the same. When leaders at the highest level take a moment to lift up the next generation, it makes all the difference.

A massive thank you to Donna for the invitation, and to Maggie for sharing her experiences, showing such genuine support for community-driven sports, and hyping up the Queens. I am taking these lessons straight into the next chapter of community development.

The 2026 Blueprint for Silverware. 🥇

Transforming a sports program requires more than just technical drills; it requires a complete architectural overhaul of team culture and standards. Posting this photo with the trophy tonight has me reflecting on what high-performance development truly looks like when athletes fully commit to the process.

Across grassroots development and elite pathways this season, we secured 10 podium finishes:

1. The Club Rebuild (Old Dunstonians - Kent)

• North Kent Junior League U13A Champions (First silverware in over 5 years).

• U13B 2nd Place (Achieved despite a heatwave and operating with an 8-player squad).

• Girls & U17 Boys Runners-up.

2. Regional & International Elite Success

• Essex Met T10 Champions.

• Ikorodu Queens T20 Champions in Lagos.

3. Strategic Impact (South Woodford)

• U11, U13 & U15 Champions as a coaching consultant.

Whether operating as a CoachED L3 Specialist in the UK or directing elite squads globally, the philosophy remains the same: build the person first, and the athlete will follow. Immensely proud of every player who contributed to this historic 2026 haul. 🏏

This is where the magic happens. We’ve done the slow, static drills and grooved the back-foot trigger movement. Now, we bring in the bowling machine to add pace, bounce, and real pressure.

Does the foundation hold up? Watch how the back foot still finds the target and the head still leads toward the ball, even when the speed increases. This is the exact transition you need to make to go from practice-net theory to match-day readiness!

Want to see the foundational drill that built this technique? Check out the previous videos on the channel to see step-by-step how we built this base! 👇

Struggling to get your body into line? 🏏 In this session, Head Coach Ingram Jones from the Open Learning Cricket Academy introduces the perfect trigger movement. By placing a green spot on the ground, we train the batter to move their back foot across the stumps, which stops them from stepping down the leg side. Lock in your alignment and build a solid base! 🧱
