PAIN ONLY ON ONE SIDE? β
Your body is incredibly good at protecting itself...
And making decisions extremely quickly π₯
If you're feeling pain or discomfort only on one side when you ride...
The first question you need to ask is:
What is the main driver for the asymmetry? π€
The BIKE POSITION π²or your BODY? π€ΈββοΈ
E.g. if your saddle height is too high...
Your body will choose to favour one side over the other.
When forced to it will try to preserve the quality of movement for one side over the other...
It doesn't want both legs feeling bad!
So it sacrifices one for the other...
And in this example, the rider drops the left hip so the left leg so the leg extension on this side is closer to ideal...
But this then creates other issues e.g.
- left side excessive saddle pressure
- right side inner thigh rub on nose of saddle
- left hand numbness
- tension down right side of the neck
- gripping toes on the right
Etc. etc. etc.
If you change your saddle position and immediately the body evens out...
You know the bike position has been the main driver of the asymmetric movement...
If you change the bike position in multiple ways but theres no change to posture or movement patterns...
Then there's probably more to be gained by working on the body itself first.
Phew! Long one, thanks for getting to the end!
DON'T BE FOOLED BY THIS... π
Treat yourself as an individual...
Your fit should be tailored to your body and your goals...
A gender specific label doesn't mean it's right for you...
Look beyond the label...
Understand your body... How it feels... It's needs
And you'll find more comfort, performance and endurance!
ARE YOU A RAINBOW? π
If you are, then it's time to make a change...
Firstly to your bike position...
Then to your upper back mobility & strength...
A good bike fit gives your body the opportunity to create better posture, better comfort and better performance!
When is Wide Fit Not Wide?
Cycling Shoes Compared...
If you've been struggling to get comfortable in your cycling shoes, then it probably isn't your fault.
Cycling shoes are confusing - there's no consistency in sizing across brands and even when manufacturers offer a wide fit option... is it actually a wide fit?
Join me on this podcast exploration of shoe sizing, what you need to know to choose a pair that actually fits and our breakdown of how different shoe brands fit...

ONE SIDE RUB? π¦΅
How well your feet function π£ will have a direct impact on your overall comfort and performance.π
Unstable feet π£ = unstable performance π₯
Do you know if your bike fit is helping or hindering your foot function? π€
Time to explore your feet.
GOOD EXAMPLE OF ...
What happens when your cockpit is too short and too high...
Forcing your body to hold more tension than it needs to...
Leading to pain and discomfort...
= Sub optimal performance...
So is your bike position working with you... Or against you?
BUYING SECOND-HAND? πΈ
There's some "great deals" out on the second-hand market...
But a deal is only a good deal if the bike fits you!
Particularly with some older time trial bikes, set aside some extra cash to make modifications to get the right fit.
FRAME SIZE? π€·ββοΈ
Most riders out there are just 'making do' with the frame that they've got...
Maybe the frame size is right...
But are your cranks the right length?
Saddle the most comfortable?
Seat at the right height?
Bars the right width, reach & drop?
Cleats in the right place?
Stem the right length?
Could you slam the stem?
Etc.
Knowledge is power π―
