Cortisol Management
Managing cortisol is a topic that's not widely discussed, however its a key component when it comes to targeting optimal health and looking to improve body composition. Cortisol comes from the adrenal glands and is the bodies key stress hormone, aswell as being known as 'flight or flight hormone.
What contributes to poor regulation of cortisol is work stress, emotional stress, bad food choices, sugar, caffeine, poor sleeping patterns and electric tronic devices. These things creates more cortisol which leads to other compounding issues such as insufficient amount of sleep.
Cortisol should be high in the morning which makes it easier for you to get up and face the day. It should be lower at night when you are relaxing and getting ready to go bed.
If your cortisol management is out of sync you will tend to find that in the mornings you will feel slouchy and you may not feel really energized fully until lunchtime. During the night when you try to wind down you will find it difficult thus creating a vicious cycle. By being in this situation in the long term can lead to fatigue, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.
Symptoms of adrenal fatigue are:
Poor sleep patterns or inability to sleep. throughout the night without waking.
Weakened immune system.
Overload of energy at night making it impossible to wind down.
To manage your levels better you need to:
Normalise sleep patterns. 8 hours minimum of sleep.
Don't watch TV or use any electronic devices one hour before bed.
Avoid low calorie diets and/or cardio sessions that's intense which puts added stress to body.
