Burnout in Ballet: Why Less is More 26/07/2023

I was trained under an old fashioned school system that was telling dancers holiday or time off for rest had a negative affect on our progress…We would overwork ourselves to the point of physical and mental exhaustion, that usually led to daily fatigue and injuries but at the same time even when injured we were supposed to push through and carry on…I’m really glad to see that the new stats prove that taking time off to rest is a positive thing and that strong and fundamental technique is not something that goes away overnight.

Burnout in Ballet: Why Less is More Burnout is a common problem in ballet that affects dancers at any stage of their career. It's a complex condition characterized by physical and mental exhaustion, reduced performance, and a loss of passion for dance.

Words of wisdom 🙏🏼

'Profound art, deep art, it can change people. And I always say, change happens in four different seasons. The first one is, people change when they hurt enough that they have to. Secondly, people change when they see enough that they're inspired to. Thirdly, people change when they learn enough that they want to. And the fourth one is, people change when they receive enough that they are able to.

So in dance, you feel that you're in the process of change. Something is changing every day. And perhaps for a moment if it connects with one audience, it'll also change them profoundly.' - Akram Khan

Another PBT session with Eiko few weeks ago.

This PBT exercise is called ‘back lifts’ and it emphasises on the strengthening of the back muscles, the deltoid muscles but also the stability of the lower half of the body engaging the glutes and the adductor muscles ( very important muscle group in Ballet) with the legs in 5th position.

I use this exercise as part of the warmup to activate the back muscles before arabesque training. Back lifts are also great for building strength and to enhance the performance of the cambré to the back.

“Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening program that has been designed to enhance students' technique by focussing on training the muscle memory required in each exercise in all forms of dance.”
