ππΎDM me GOALSππΎ
When you're experiencing fertility challenges, here are some of the things you might hold back in a career conversation with your manager
π· I'm not even supposed to be here, I would have been on maternity had I not miscarried
π· I'm not good enough
π· These plans are great but honestly I want to be on maternity by then
π· I'm so overwhelmed
π· I'm loosing confidence in myself
π· I can't deal with this conversation right now because I've just had a hard conversation with my clinic and I just want to cry
π· I want the stretch project but I also really don't want to add anymore to my plate
π· I've been tapping the breaks for a while and I don't know how to get going again
π· I feel like a complete failure because my body doesn't work
π· Pure rage at, well everything
It's really hard to talk things through in a meaningful way when you're only having half the conversation. Goals can feel quite disingenuous and it's hard to feel comfortable being vulnerable. I help my clients put everything on the table, so we can actually deal with it all.

"Not carrying the baby yourself β you feel this strong sense of grief but also this powerlessness" John Legend
I find myself mostly speaking to women. Be it clients, peers, HR, Employee Resource Groups - all of these amazing women navigating their challenges, sharing their experiences, making change in their organisations.
I'd love for men to feel more included in the conversation because fertility challenges, loss, grief...they're not just women's issues. Men are impacted too.
I know some brilliant coaches and content creators who are creating space for men in the conversation and thank goodness for them quite frankly.

This is very very cool because the o***y stimulation bit of IVF was just not pleasant at all. Injections, hormones, bloating, procedures and a LOT of emotions (if you know you know π π₯΅ π« π‘ π‘ π€¬ π₯ π π π€¬ π€¬ ).

Career Plus Fertility: Goal Setting When Everything Feels Hard isn't the snappiest of event titles but that is essentially the situation my clients find themselves in.
Everything feels harder because they're dealing with one of the most draining things they've ever had to do - navigate their fertility challenges. Career goals are limited to, "just get through today." And then they reach that point where they feel like something has to change but what, how and whether they can feel like unanswerable questions. It can all feel so hard and overwhelming to manage both career and a challenging fertility journey.
So I'm hoping my masterclass helps a few people with finding some clarity.

Sometimes the trauma of your fertility
journey can change you.
For me, there was a dramatic change in what
confidence looked like. Trauma caused anxiety for me
generally which then crept into work settings and
suddenly I had to learn how to manage panic attacks
that I had never had before. Aspects to my career that
had previously just been "my job" would sometimes
make me feel like I couldn't breathe and my heart was
being crushed.
I now find Anxiety easiest to manage when I stop
fighting it. It's a part of me now and it doesn't mean
I'm broken. Not even slightly. It means I've been
through some s**t and that's ok. Instead of fighting
anxiety and trying to "just be confident" now my
confidence looks like self-acceptance.
I find admitting to myself "I feel a little nervous" or just
naming the heart quickening and ringing ears as
"totally normal and understandable on-coming anxiety"
enables me to get some deep belly breaths in, channel
the energy and get on with the task at hand. My
nerves don't embarrass me, why should they when
they're a very normal trauma response?!
PS...Anxiety and it's associated body sensations are
very normal even without the trauma! Accepting them
rather than suppressing them is definitely the path of
least resistance.

Why do people juggling career and fertility challenges
sometimes feel stuck? π
π‘ Because the stress and grief of infertility can
gradually seep into your professional life.
π Confidence in self can take a nosedive
π Motivation can be hard to find
π Tolerance for frustration and BS is thin!
All these things can happen to us at any time of course
but when you're going through fertility challenges,
they're particularly common and can leave you feeling
unsure what to change or where to start.
Good companies and leaders can coach and train
around career development but rarely do they talk
candidly about how to do it when you have massively
draining life events going on. Much more impactful to
consider yourself as a whole when thinking about your
development because the hard stuff follows you to
work.

I'm not one for resolutions because I'm
terrible at keeping them. I work with my clients to set

If youβre having a tough time on your fertility journey or
struggling through grief, setting career goals can feel
a bit disingenuous. Even when you know youβre not
where you want to be career-wise, it can be difficult to
focus your attention away from the challenging life
events you have going on outside of work.
Difficult but not impossible, I can help you set goals
that are sensitive to your situation. Look forward to

π Finally winding down for Christmas, and what a year it's been.
*trigger warning for anyone trying to conceive - sensitive update below*
Early 2023 I took a leap of faith and turned my part time passion into my full time job. Making the switch from corporate HR to self-employed Career Coach With a Fertility Lens was seriously scary for many reasons but the biggest and scariest thing for me was this thought...
π If you want to truly support people in balancing fertility challenges with their careers, you're going to have to be pretty candid in sharing your own story. π
Gulp! After such a long time putting on a brave face it's a lot to tell the world "hey I had this really difficult bit of life outside of work going on that impacted my confidence quite substantially at one point, and oh yeah it's to do with my womb."
I am so glad I found my big girl pants and did start sharing my story and raising awareness. Because with every resulting conversation, I'm reminded how many people are going through some version of what I experienced and would like support, not just from a Career Coach but also from their employer.
So I'm closing 2023 feeling;
π Immense pride for my coaching clients, seeing them regain confidence and control of their careers after having been through so much with their fertility journeys has been inspiring.
π Excited for my corporate clients who have started some brave conversations about fertility challenges and their impact on employee wellbeing, laying the groundwork for change.
π Especially overjoyed to be welcoming our own beautiful baby boy to the world in January!
Looking ahead to 2024, the start of the year will be different that's for sure. As motivated as I've been as a new and growing business, I have been winding down with work in preparation for the very thing I've longed for - being a mummy. So I'm likely to be a little quite on here.
But I'm not winding down forever. If you or anyone you know would like to work with me, I have a waitlist for when I return to work in 2024 that you can join and the link is in my bio.
Lastly, a big thank you to my clients and peers - I'm inspired by your stories every day.

This week is Baby Loss Awareness Week, here's why it's important for employers to be aware.
When you consider the stats around miscarriage, pregnancy loss, still births and neonatal loss. Then add on top of that the number of people grieving unsuccessful fertility treatment. It's heartbreaking and dizzying to think of how many people there are in the workplace experiencing baby loss grief.
A large percentage of this group will be grieving in secret. Using sick leave instead of a specific baby-loss bereavement policy. Having secret cries in toilet cubicles or on lunch breaks before returning to business as usual. Masking their grief in every interaction and feeling exhausted with the effort. Signing "congratulations" cards for colleagues who have just had babies whilst holding back tears. Hearing a baby in the office on a visiting colleagues keep in touch day and wondering how they can discreetly get away? Politely responding to well-meaning but upsetting comments like "at least you know you can get pregnant and try again." The list of triggers in the workplace is endless.
Employers, colleagues, managers - is baby loss something that you are mindful of in the workplace? You won't always know who it is you're helping by being considerate but I guarantee you'll be helping someone.

But self-compassion isn't always the first tool we grab from the box, lots of people find it easier to tell themselves "I should be" this, that or the other. That's an exhausting lens to look at your job through because the core focus is about what you're not, it's really negative.
When we focus on what you ARE, well that's a more energising starting point already. If you're balancing your fertility journey with your career, what you ARE is someone doing 2 VERY HARD THINGS so take a moment to recognise that. Really recognise it, take a deep breath and say something kind to yourself.
Self-Compassion 101 is the FREE foundation masterclass to my upcoming course Career Plus Fertility: Balance With Confidence. I'd love to see you there as an act of being kind to yourself! Link is in my bio to register. π«Ά
You're doing an amazing job, keep going.
