India's 2003–04 tour of Australia was composed of seven first-class matches, including four Tests. India also participated in an ODI tri-series with Australia and Zimbabwe. The Test series was drawn 1–1, and India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy because of their victory in the Trophy's previous contest. In the 2003-04 series' Adelaide Test, Rahul Dravid scored a double century, securing a famous win for India. Sachin Tendulkar scored 241* in Sydney, which up until that point in his career was his highest score in a Test match. Captain Sourav Ganguly made his first test century against Australia, a 144 in Brisbane that gave his team a lead of 86 after they were in trouble. VVS Laxman played consistently well throughout this series, most notably his contribution in the Adelaide test is well remembered. This series was also the last for Steve Waugh, who had captained Australia to a record equalling 16 consecutive test match victories and had 41 victories in 57 Tests.

The Indian national cricket team toured Pakistan during the 2003–04 cricket season. It was announced in early January 2004 that India would tour Pakistan in March that year. After the India team's management and players expressed security concerns in Pakistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India sent a three-member team in February to assess the situation and reported that they were "satisfied with the security measures being planned by Pakistan". Happy with their report, the Indian government gave a go-ahead to the tour after a few days.

India entered the Test series never having won a Test in Pakistani soil. India's 15 man squad for the Test series was announced on 22 March 2004. Yuvraj Singh, rewarded for his consistent performances in the domestic circuit, and spinner Anil Kumble and Ajit Agarkar, who recovered from injuries, were included. The squad comprised seven batsmen, four medium-pacer and three spinners. The Pakistan Test squad was announced three days later. Batsmen Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan were dropped and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria was included.

India's captain Sourav Ganguly was ruled out of the side due to an injured back before the First Test. Rahul Dravid, who had previously led India only once, was named the stand-in captain. Ganguly returned for the Third Test as player and captain. Also, Ashish Nehra was brought in the side in Ajit Agarkar's place for that Test.

The Indian Cricket Team toured South Africa for 3 Tests and five ODIs from 16 November 2006 to 6 January 2007.

Coming into the Johannesburg Test in 2006, India had played nine Tests on the soil of rainbow nation without tasting a victory even once. And the chance to end the win less streak even in this series was dismal considering the team had been drubbed 3-0 in the ODI series that preceded the Test series.

South Africa began the match well bowling India out for 249 with Sourav Ganguly, who was making a comeback to the Indian side after being dropped due to poor form, top scoring with an unbeaten 51. The visitors would have hoped to bat the tourists out of the game, but then they ran into young S Sreesanth.

The 23-year old boy from Kerala swung the ball prodigiously to demolish home batsmen as India were able to bowl out home side for only 84 runs. Though the hosts fared better in the second innings, it didn’t stop India from registering their first ever victory in Test matches on the South African soil. Though South Africa went on to win the next two matches to clinch the series, this victory would always remain memorable for India.
