Vaisakhi: Millions of Sikhs around the world will be celebrating Vaisakhi today. On this day, in April 1699, the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, inaugurated the order of Saint-Soldiers who pledged their dedication to defend the needy, poor and oppressed and their respective social, economic and political rights.
Vaisakhi was a day already celebrated all around India, as it marked the start of the harvest period. Guru Gobind Singh Ji on this day invited Sikhs before him, in the holy city of Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, India, and requested for 5 people to come forward with their heads. The 5 were taken into a tent one by one, and came out, baptised and adorned in the attire of a ‘Khalsa’. Sikhs on this day were bestowed with the 5k’s, and these 5 beloved ones were re-named, not according to their caste or creed, but with names that would be used as virtues for Sikhs worldwide, Bhai Daya Singh (compassion), Bhai Dharam Singh (faith), Bhai Himmat Singh (courage), Bhai Mohkham Singh (confidence) and Bhai Sahib Singh (leadership).
Wishing you all a very Happy Vaisakhi & Khalsa Sajna Divas (the day the Khalsa was created).
