Sometimes, life throws you off course in ways you never expected. As the legendary Mike Tyson once remarked, โ€˜Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.โ€™ This resonated with me deeply at the weekend, during my Hyrox race, in Frankfurt, where my meticulously crafted plan unraveled in an instant.

The moment was surreal: there I was, pushing the sled with determination, when suddenly, a sharp pain shot through my calf. It was a pulled muscle, my unexpected โ€˜punch in the mouth,โ€™ derailing my race and shattering my strategy. The physical pain was immediate, but the mental shock was even more profound.

In that pivotal moment, the easy choice would have been to quit, to step aside and protect myself from further harm. But something within me resisted that option. I chose to persevere, to push through the agony. This decision wasnโ€™t just about physical endurance; it became a profound journey into the depths of my mental fortitude.

As I continued, each step was a battle, a defiance against the odds. The experience transformed from a mere physical challenge into a testament of resilience. It was no longer about winning or losing; it was about proving to myself that even when plans fall apart, when the unexpected strikes hard, I have the inner strength to face it head-on.

This journey in Frankfurt taught me an invaluable lesson about the power of mental resilience. When life disrupts your plans, when you face your own version of being โ€˜punched in the mouth,โ€™ itโ€™s the inner battle, the resilience and determination that truly define your character and your journey.

The Eternal Struggle in Hyrox

We've all been there, at that moment in a Hyrox race, where you face the burpee broad jumps. It's a challenge that never seems to get easier, no matter how many times you've braved it.
Each jump feels like a leap of faith, and each burpee feels like an endless cycle of willpower testing.
It's as if time slows down, and you're in a never-ending loop of jumps and burpees.

The struggle is real โ€“ every leap demanding more from your already tired muscles, every drop into a burpee testing your mental grit. It's not just a physical challenge; it's a mental one too.
You start strong, feeling like a superhero, only to be humbled a few jumps in. The burn sets in, your breath becomes laboured, and your legs feel like they're made of lead.
You look ahead and the finish line seems to be moving further away. The struggle is not just with the distance or the fatigue; it's with the inner voice that keeps asking, 'How many more?'

So, how do we make them a bit more bearable, if not easier? Here are three tips to improve your burpee broad jumps, apart from the obvious tip of doing more in training:

* Focus on Form, Not Speed: It's tempting to rush through them to get it over with, but that can lead to sloppy form and increased risk of injury. Focus on landing softly, maintaining a good posture, and using your arms to drive you forward. Good form leads to more efficient movement, which means less energy wasted.

* Build Your Core and Leg Strength: Strengthening your core and legs outside of the Hyrox class can make a big difference. Squats, lunges, and planks are great exercises to build the necessary strength for those explosive jumps and stable burpees.

* Work on Your Mental Game: A large part of the battle is mental. Break down the challenge into smaller segments. Instead of thinking of the total number you have to do, focus on completing just three at a time, then reset. Celebrate these small victories โ€“ they add up!

I've been thinking a lot lately about why we do what we do. It's not just about crossing the finish line or smashing a personal best. It's about something deeper, something that resonates within each of us.

I stumbled upon this saying that hit home: "The man who loves walking will walk further than the man who loves the destination."
It's like a mirror to our HYROX journey, isn't it?
We're not just here for the patches, flags or the glory; we're here for the love of the sport, the community, the challenge.

Every time I lace up my trainers, I feel it.

It's not just about the race day; it's about those early mornings, the late-night training sessions, the sweat, the laughter, and yes, even the occasional tears. It's about feeling alive in every heartbeat, every breath during our workouts.

And let's be real โ€“ it's emotional.

We've all had those moments, pushing through the pain, feeling like giving up, but then... we don't. We keep going.

Why?

Because there's something magical in the struggle, in the camaraderie, in pushing past what we thought were our limits.

So, let's celebrate that.
Each step we take in training, every second we shave off our time, it's a testament to our passion, our dedication, and our love for this incredible sport.

Remember, HYROX isn't just a race; it's a journey of the heart. Let's keep finding joy in the journey, in every challenge, in every victory, no matter how big or small.

Keep pushing, keep loving, keep living every moment of this journey. Because, at the end of the day, it's the journey that shapes us, not just the destination.

Marathon? Completed it, mate! โœ…

When I decided to do my first marathon, the plan was to go big. I wanted a sub 3hr!
The furthest Iโ€™d ever run before my training block was 22km ๐Ÿ˜…

It was a BIG goal.

I finished the Frankfurt marathon with a time of 03:06:37. Not bad for a first attempt.

Iโ€™m happy with my time. But, I know Iโ€™ve let myself down a little. I didnโ€™t do all that I could to reach my goal of sub 3 hours. I think thatโ€™s just because, in the grand scheme of things, what did achieving that goal really mean.

The sacrifices it would have taken to achieve it would have meant missing social events, holidays, time with my girlfriend.
Things that I ultimately didnโ€™t want to give up.

And thatโ€™s ok. Having big goals is great! It was what motivated me to even attempt a marathon. I didnโ€™t want to just do a marathon, to do a marathon. I wanted to push myself.

But now I know the sub 3hr is well within my reach!

I mean, I did 4 long runs in my training block and the last of those was on the 9th September, where I encountered a Paula Radcliffe moment, in the Italian countryside ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ’ฉ
Not the most ideal of preparations!! But thatโ€™s me all over. Doing the bare minimum and hoping for success!

Next time, yes there will be a next time, I will be better.

Set big goals that seem out of reach. If you donโ€™t quite make it, youโ€™ve still achieved far more than you may have ever thought possible!

Wow! Just wow!

Big shoutout to my client Steve, whoโ€™s been killin' it week after week! ๐Ÿ™Œ

In just 12 weeks, heโ€™s shaved about 20 seconds per km off his 1km run times, and thatโ€™s starting from a pretty solid place!

Honestly, Iโ€™m super impressed, but not shocked.

Steveโ€™s been all in from the start. We mapped it all out, laid the base, and now weโ€™re watching the magic happen!

And his gains in strength? Just as wow!

So last week, I started my 40th lap around the Sun and it got me thinking... ๐ŸŒโ˜€๏ธ

Life's been a whirlwind of experiences, lessons, dreams chased, and milestones achieved.
But amidst the hustle and magic, there's one silent partner that's been with me through it all โ€“ my health.

This realisation hit me hard: our health isnโ€™t just a part of our journey; it is the journey.

Without it, the dreams stay dreams. The memories we wish to create might remain locked away. That spontaneous laughter with mates or the simple joy of a long, evening stroll becomes a distant mirage.

Health, truly, is the unsung hero of our stories.

Often, weโ€™re so immersed in the daily grind, we forget to check in with our most valuable asset.
We wait, naively believing that it'll always be there, until the day it decides to remind us with aches, discomfort, or fatigue.
๐Ÿšซ That's like waiting for a plant to wilt before we water it.
