A Business Owner looks online for a Personal Trainer after putting on unhealthy weight.
They go to the first website and book a call.
Then asks:
👨💼“Please can you tell me how to get in shape?”
The PT answers:
🧢“I’m an experienced, high-performance athlete and I am a high achiever”
👨💼” Really, that’s very interesting. Can you help me to get in shape?”
🧢” I can bench press 80kg. I’m capable of passing military fitness tests and my sprint time is 9.9 seconds.”
👨💼” Thanks. That’s interesting but…my shape?”
🧢 “My other achievements include; public speaking, 10k Instagram followers, Author of a diet book. I’ve done two ironman’s and I’ve been featured in men’s health magazine.”
👨💼"Thanks, I’ll look elsewhere"

I have to admit I fangirl a little when some cars go past in London.
The shapes, the sounds and awesome shades glimmer from the driver's seat.
This is very often the case on my regular walks around Canary Wharf. Today however was a little different.
One car got me thinking…
You see, the underground garage opened up from one of the offices and a gorgeous Maserati pulled out.
It accelerated out with wheels spinning only to drive 10 metres onto a red light. The wheels screeched and suddenly it came to a stop near missing a moped.
I paused for a second in surprise, the smell of rubber and shock filled the faces of bystanders.
Sure enough, when the light turned green it sped off perhaps not even batting an eyelid to what had just happened.
At what cost are you willing to get to your destination faster and are you risking your life in doing so?

So you’ve got to a place of moderate to great success,
You wear nice clothes,

You’ve gritted your teeth and persisted. You just got it done no matter how tough.
Most people want to have more;
- More success
- More money
- A better body
- Better relationships
The 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙩𝙝 is if you want to have more... you have to become more…
Long term success isn’t simply doing more… But becoming more.

Do you switch your state?
One strategy I use is to listen to a song or even a playlist. Listening to a particular song consistently triggers a stimulus which activates a physical calming response.
My breathing improves and even my posture improves!
How?
This works because I use a process in NLP terms called Anchoring.
An anchor is something positive or negative that provides comfort, security or stability in times of transition, turbulence or doubt. This can occur in many forms.

Through mental rehearsal this specific song triggers a positive response for me.
Let me clarify,
Think about an elephant that has been shackled from a young age, initially trying to escape, it realises that it can’t and goes on under the same belief that it cannot escape for the duration of it’s life without intervention even though the shackle has been removed.
This type of behaviour can be seen in people, metaphorically living with chains around their leg making the belief of transition into a healthier, fitter lifestyle seem impossible.
Similarly anchors can have the opposite effect listening to a certain song can remind you of a painful experience.

The temptation is to BEAST yourself
Especially if you've reached breaking point where you've put your foot down and called it - enough is enough!
Below is the Inverted U Hypothesis – Too much or too little arousal and anxiety will cause poor performance. A medium amount of anxiety and arousal will result in optimum performance. Notably this differs based on activity.
Although the temptation can be to sign your life away to the soon to be rise in outdoor Bootcamps, it is important to understand your specific needs and how levels of arousal may increase or inhibit your best performance especially in a group environment.
Why do I say this?
This isn't to knock the Bootcamp movement, but having a clear understanding of how you react in these environments is key.
Are you a red blooded Alpha Male or Female? Is there a chance that you may over train to impress others or even ignore red flags such as muscle soreness. Are you likely to skip recovery time mentally and physically? Are Bootcamps really suitable for you?
