How crazy is this…
Nothing to sell
This is what happens when a challenge is laid down no matter how subtle it is said. My friend Toby popped by and casually asked how many push ups could I do?
-
Straight off the bat, no warm up I did 40 - GET IN…

It’s amazing what a bit of motivation can do and a challenge to your manhood.

Next week I’ll be ready for 50!
MAN TRAINING
-
I was walking through the house yesterday and saw my dumbbells in the corner.
Out on the deck 2 minutes later the sun came out and I thought ‘ I could do a quick weights workout’.
And the next thing I know I’ve got my dumbbells in my hands I’m cracking on.
This is my 3rd set and I went down into the garden.
Chest press x 15
Stand up sit down x 15
Shoulder press x 15
Dead lift x 15
Bent over row x 15
Curl x 15
Tricep kick back x 15
Reverse lunge x 15
And finally, a big heavy bag of compost up and down the stairs.
It’s this final bit of ‘Man Training’ that is the really good struff for me.
Functional training that helps in everyday life.
There’s many types of workouts, cardio, weights, HIIT, functional, mobilisation and body weight to name just a few I’ve posted about in the past.
This morning my body was aching and even though my plan was to run along the river I listened to my body.
Aching lower back, sore knee blah, blah, blah. So I went for a stretch and mobilise. It felt great and was just what I needed.
I used one of my favourite bits of kit - an 8ft wooden pole. It is a real help to stretch my back and shoulders and really useful in helping mobilise my whole torso.

I absolutely LOVE but I know it’s not good for my waistline!

Obviously I went CRAZY over the Christmas eating way too much choccy. This is what I normally do and I also have a bad week of it around my birthday.
-
It usually takes about 3 weeks for me to kick the habit, during that time I am always yearning for something sweet.
-
I know I have to be strong and I challenge myself by leaving chocolate out so I can see it. BUT, I look at it and say to myself I am in charge I am in control of myself. I follow the CHIMP principle. More on that another time. -
-
Have a great weekend fellas.

Often men will ask me why I work out and what’s the benefit of ‘functional training’?
I can give you an example from earlier today.
I was meeting a friend outside the tube station in front of a busy shopping centre in Stratford. There’s no place for a car to stop and wait. As I was walking across the concourse I saw him driving by.
Without thinking I broke into an 85% sprint. I covered the 50 meters sharpish and managed to jump in without missing him.
I did it instinctively, (and really enjoyed it) it felt good! I didn’t pull a hamstring, I didn’t tweak my achilles, feel out of breath or keel over from a heart attack.
I felt good and even though I’ve had some injuries it feels like my body is working well.
And that’s why I workout. You never know when you’ll have to leap into action, lift something awkward or move a heavy object.
It’s better to be ready and have your body accustomed ‘doing stuff’ than do yourself a mischief and be laid up for weeks.
Training and working out is a lifestyle choice, a choice for a better quality of life.
And that’s why I do it.
Well, another new year and a load of New Year's Resolutions... NOT FOR ME!
I've set myself a few goals, check out the last video (of shame) where I am attacked by a squirrel and tell you about my goals from that day.
_
But the big goals are health-related. I'm 60 years old now and need to shift some weight and some of that nasty visceral belly fat - the dangerous stuff!
-
It's also about support and motivation to help each other stay fitter, get stronger and live healthier. Watch and enjoy!
