What can I say to young people today? My silence is my best answer. I've been
teaching for thirty-eight years. A reasonable percentage of it has been successful.
All in all, however, it is a profession of futility. You're constantly turning out rea-
sonably well-trained people who could be efficient actors within their own scope.
We turn them out in a continuous stream. Where do they go? What happens to
their hopes and what happens to their wishes? What happens to the amount of seri-
ous work that was put into their training and the serious work on their part trying
to master the training? I don't know how you can come to a positive answer.
I don't think there can be a theatre in this country unless it is put back where it
belongs. That's got to be out of the profit system and allowed to function the way
something functions when it depends on natural evolution and organic growth. The
universities have theatres that cost thousands of dollars. Everything moves up and
down and sideways. And what do they do? They start with Oedipus and go up
from there. Their repertoire knows no limitations. They make me very angry be-
cause I wouldn't play one of the last Sonatas of Beethoven. The kids who think it is
fun to act should not be permitted publically to play Shakespeare.
Teaching-the way I teach-is a terribly wearying profession of futility. I know
more truly gifted people who can't get a job-who are waiters, and so on. It is very
depressing. And I try to get them to give it up. Well, that's like trying to get some-
one to give up living. So what can I think? I can't be an optimist. I'd be a fool if I
were. It's not good. But then, the whole country's not so good either. And the life of
the theatre is a pretty accurate reflection of the larger life outside. (Sanford Meisner 1976)

ACTORS: places available on the Tues 2-6pm 2nd Term Meisner Technique 1st Year Training Programme Actors East East London.
This will suit anyone who's completed an Introduction Week in the Technique AND who's progressed in the training to a point where they are engaging with 'independent activities and knocks at the door'. Each term is 6 weeks long. There are 3 terms remaining and the minimum commitment would be for a term, but ideally for the duration.
