AA Academy youth teams reach National Cadet League final

Younger players from Alex Anghel’s Highbury-based AA Academy Table Tennis Club have reached the final stage of the National Cadet League.
The teams are top of both divisions in the prestigious table tennis competition, which is a showcase for the sport’s rising talent.

“We are in the final stages of the UK National Cadet League, where the battle for medals is on; it’s quite an important moment,” says club coach and founder Alex Anghel.

Two AA Academy teams are leading in two divisions. Team one is top of Division 3 with three wins, while team two is top of Division 7, also winning three matches.

“Both of our teams have delivered excellent performances so far,” says coach Alex Anghel, adding that after three wins each, the teams are well positioned “as we head into the decisive matches.”

Alex praised the athletes’ hard work, determination and team spirit.

“The final battles for medals are ahead and we look forward to finishing the league strong.” The National Cadet League will take place on Sunday, March 15.

National Cadet British League (Stage 1)

The younger players of the Table Tennis Academy will compete in the second round of a national table tennis competition on Sunday.

This is the club team’s first foray into national competitions and will play against two teams in two divisions.

The youngsters have already proven their worth with strong performances in the first round in early January.

“Our players demonstrated the skills they developed in training and achieved important victories,” says the academy’s founder and head coach, Alex Anghel.

The team won two of the three matches played in division seven and was “The team played three games and came very close to a perfect record, but ultimately ended the day with just one win. Despite playing more games and putting in strong performances, small margins made the difference, preventing the team from winning all of their games in division three,” he added.

Playing at this level is exciting and offers players valuable experience playing at a higher level.

One of the academy players “competed with determination in every match” and was rewarded by not losing a single match, “even when he was led for most of the game,” says the coach.

Both academy teams finished third out of four in their groups. The next matches in the national cadet competition will be held in London, at Westminster Under School, on February 1.

Coach Alex Anghel is confident that both teams will do well and is training with that goal in mind.

“We are now focused on preparing for the next stage,” he said.

A dozen young players -- all members of the Table Tennis Academy club -- will
be testing their skills against the competition at the forthcoming National Cadet
League.
The League event takes place in London next week and the club will be fielding
two teams with ages ranging from eight to fifteen.
The competition has seven divisions and the club's youngsters will be participating
in divisions three and seven, which is no mean feat since it only started up last
year.
'TT Academy is based in Highbury close to the Emirates football stadium. It was
formally set up in September,' says the club's mainstay, coach Alex Anghel.
'So, to have two young teams from the club performing at this prestigious event is
very exciting indeed,' he added.
Alex has a lot of experience encouraging younger players having coached in
Italy for four years with another three and a half coaching in schools and clubs
across London. With that sort of experience, he can spot talent when he sees it.
'We have some good players among the younger members, and I can see a lot of
potential there,' the coach says.
The competition is a national event aimed at promoting young talent.
The National Cadet British League will take place at Westminster School Sports Centre, Greycoat Street, SW1P 2QD on Sunday, January 11th
