The Danger of Skipping Your Pre-Dive Valve Check ⚠️
Jan, an experienced diver, almost found herself in a serious bind when her tank valve wasn't fully open. After some breathing resistance on descent, she couldn't get a full breath at depth. Luckily, she and her dive buddy stayed calm, shared air, and made a smooth ascent.
Here's the kicker: old-school advice to back off the valve a little after turning it on is no longer necessary! With modern tank valves, just open it all the way. And always, always do a thorough buddy check, especially if you're in a rush to get in the water.
As we know, the Lionfish is native to the Red Sea and an invasive species to many parts of the world. It was accidentally introduced to the Mediterranean after the Suez Canal was created, and to Florida and the Caribbean, most likely as a discarded pet.
This fish has no natural predators in it's new adopted environments, so hunting them (as they tend to be everywhere, in great numbers) is fair game. They decimate local, native species, too.
As their poison is protein based, there are no special glands that must be removed for them to be eaten safely, nor is it essential to remove the spines (though highly recommended). You only need to cook them thoroughly before eating. Good eating, too 😋 nom nom. 🐟 🍴🌊
