Save Putney's 33-metre pool 03/06/2026

Save Putney's 33-metre pool I've been swimming at Putney Leisure Centre for over 16 years. I'll be honest: the centre is run down and tired, and it badly needs modernising - I've more than once thought about coughing up for a posh gym with newer facilities. But I never have. The one thing that's kept me here all these years is...

We just received an incredibly generous £1,000 donation from Gauthier (@coach_gdc). Gauthier hasn’t been able to train at PC recently, but after seeing the video by Nic (@nic_hijazi) about our lease battle with TfL, he stepped straight up. He’s soon moving back to Barnes, so we can’t wait to welcome him back under the arches soon.
When we say PC is a community, not just a business, this is exactly what we mean. People looking out for the space that kept them strong. The video Nic (@nic_hijazi) made shows what we are up against in saving PC from unaffordable, gentrified rents.
As an officially recognised Asset of Community Value (ACV) fast approaching 100 years of serving SW London, our heritage runs deep. Founded by a Margaret Gray in 1928, PC has been home to Gary Taylor (WSM winner) and anyone who is anyone in the physical culture world for the last 98 years. That legacy continues today, we are currently home to World Champions!
To keep our doors open while we fight for a permanent solution to these skyrocketing rents, several survival options appeared in the comments. We are exploring:
• Adjusting membership prices - whether a modest £10 increase, moving to budget pricing models, or looking at the reality of what it takes to cover gentrified rents (which would mean moving toward the £120 to £240 ballpark).
• Shifting toward a group-class style model, which is how other gyms in gentrified areas efficiently use space to survive.
• Actively pursuing corporate sponsorship deals, heritage grants, or donations.
In the short term, donations can help keep the lights on and buy us the time needed to secure a long-term future. If you want to join Gauthier in supporting the UK’s oldest physical culture club, you can donate via the donation button on our website (physicalculture.co.uk) linked in our bio (just scroll to the bottom of the webpage) If you prefer to contribute via bank transfer—like Gauthier did—so 100% goes straight toward saving PC without platform fees, please DM for bank details.Thank you, Gauthier.
