Amazing to see Liverpool City Council sharing this inspirational story of Alexandra Bahor, an amazing Roma activists and an exceptional professional making access to health easier for all communities in Liverpool and the area.

"I was hiding my identity because of the discrimination."

As a child growing up in Romania, Alexandra Bahor hid that she was Roma because of the prejudice she experienced.

Today, she's a Roma activist in Liverpool, using both her lived experience and professional expertise to challenge stereotypes, champion inclusion and inspire the next generation.

For Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month, Alexandra shares why education changed her life, why representation matters, and why she believes meaningful partnership starts with listening.

"Question your assumptions. Listen. Learn. And when you hear prejudice, challenge it."

Roma people in Iran

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Manata Hashemi, Associate Professor of Iranian Studies at University of Oklahoma.

Professor Hashemi’s research explores the role of music within Roma communities in Iran, building on her extensive work on Roma music and culture across Europe. It was a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss the importance of preserving and celebrating Roma cultural heritage.

Reflecting on her visit, Professor Hashemi shared:

“It was such a pleasure meeting Sylvia and the rest of the team at the Roma Support Group. The RSG is doing amazing work to enrich the lives of Roma communities. But what I appreciate the most is that they center Roma agency and strength, creating space for coalition-building and solidarity across class, ethnic, and cultural lines.”

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with researchers whose work helps deepen understanding of Roma histories, culture, and communities, and we look forward to future collaborations.

As part of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month, we are presenting our “Roma Stories” exhibition at Southwark Council. The exhibition will be up until this Friday so do come and visit!
