Scottish geologist, agriculturalist, chemical manufacturer, naturalist and physician James Hutton was born 3 June 1726. Often referred to as the "Father of Modern Geology," the principles described in ‘Theory of the Earth’ (1795) were fundamental to the shaping of modern geological science.
As part of the 300th anniversary celebrations we are delighted to have a rare manuscript copy of 'Theory of the Earth' on display in our library for the whole of June. The document is the only known surviving geological manuscript by Hutton. Only the first two parts of 'Theory of the Earth' (1795) were published in his lifetime and this manuscript is a partial draft of either part 3 or 4. The Society would eventually publish it as the third volume in 1899.

The manuscript can be viewed during normal opening hours until 30 June. Plan your visit at https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/about-us/visit-us/

🔍 What do we know about the Red Planet's ancient environment? Could it have once supported life?
Join us on 23 June at 18:00 to explore the landscapes of Jezero Crater on Mars and discover NASA's Perseverance rover's key findings. Dr Keyron Hickman-Lewis will tell us the tales of this rover, which continues to traverse the Martian surface collecting samples to uncover the planet's history and possible evidence of extraterrestrial life.
Attend this Public Lecture in person at Burlington House, London, or join us online. This event is free and open to all.
