New research from the British Journal of Sports Medicine is highlighting the benefits of strength training, and it made me smile because it’s exactly why WAFA has been championing it since 2018.
Not because it’s trendy.
Not because it’s the latest fitness craze.
Because being stronger helps women stay capable, independent, confident, and active for longer.
The challenge isn’t knowing strength training is good for us. It’s knowing where to start, especially if the thought of joining a gym feels intimidating.
That’s exactly why we created our 6-Week Strength Training Programme.
A supportive place to start, learn, build confidence, and discover what your body is capable of.
Our next programme starts on 15th June.
Curious? Drop a 💪🏻 below or send us a message and we’ll happily share the details!

As Featured in The Guardian ❤️
All women start with our signature 6-Week Strength Programme. Helping Women 40+ Grow Stronger One Rep At A Time. Lifting, Challenging & Thriving For Life!
When you hit your 50s, getting active again can feel very different to how it once did. Like our member Natalie here who feared joining a gym, yet found us instead through The Guardian.
Anna is not here to use her body to sell what we do in WAFA. That’s missing the point.
Our important point here is to help women especially in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond to start building strength consistently and in a space that has other women that feel like them.
We’re opening our doors to our next 6-Week Strength Programme starting Monday 15th June with limited spaces.

Sadly, my Dad passed away in January this year. He was 82 and had been very ill for some time, so I knew that it was his time.
It’s the first time I’ve experienced grief. As he had been so poorly, I honestly thought I would feel relieved that he could finally be at peace, but I realised it doesn’t quite work that way. It’s been a few months now and whilst I miss him, time has been a healer.
Today I was given this photograph, which sat in his room for years. Whenever I went to see him, he would point at it and say, “Everyone loves that photo.” Today I was gifted it and it immediately brought a smile to my face.
It now has pride of place on my wall to remind me of my Dad but also that this was taken on one of my happiest days, getting married to Chris. Happy days. ❤️
Have you ever hesitated to start exercising because of a health condition?
Inside WAFA, we don’t work with “perfectly fit” women.
We work with real women navigating real life: anxiety, menopause, joint issues, chronic conditions, recovery phases, and everything in between.
And the focus is never on limitation.
It’s on what can be safely built from where you are right now.
If you’ve been waiting for a sign that you’re still allowed to start, this is it!
You’re welcome to join us, whether online or in-person, exactly as you are.

A reminder that getting healthier doesn’t have to mean being “perfect.”
The goal is not to do everything perfectly for one week.
The goal is to build routines you can still return to when life gets busy, stressful, emotional, messy, or exhausting.
Small habits repeated consistently will always beat extremes you can’t maintain.
Which reminder did you need most today?

Losing weight is not the issue.
The question is what we’re prioritising again.
Because many women have been here before and many still are: the obsession with body shape, the food noise, the constant feeling of needing to “earn” what you eat.
Just a reminder: strength and weight loss do not compete. They work together, especially during peri and post-menopause, to support your health, your body and your future self long-term.
What matters more to you right now: how your body looks, or what your body can do?
Hen do in Margate. Fancy dress, dancing, belly laughing, painting, just good times. Making happy memories
Have you ever felt anxious about starting at the gym or unsure if it’s even the right environment for you?
If you have, Natalie’s story might sound familiar.
Starting is often the hardest part, not because women don’t want to train, but because the “traditional gym route” can feel loud and overwhelming before it even begins.
For Natalie, it was about finding a way to begin that didn’t feel intimidating which is why she chose to start with us online from the safety of her home.
Her experience is a reminder that sometimes progress starts when the approach feels right for you, not when you force yourself into something that doesn’t.
If this resonates with you, send us a DM and we can talk you through how to start in a way that actually feels doable and welcoming whether inperson or online.
Beginner-friendly through to advanced strength workout incoming!
Set your timer:
40 seconds work
20 seconds rest
Complete 3 sets of each movement before moving on.
Quick coaching tips:
1. Reach & Cross Skip the twist if your back doesn’t like it.
2. Goblet Lunge When using the seated option, lift one heel and put all the weight in the grounded foot. Swap legs halfway in set 3.
3. Bicep Curl / Arnold Press Choose the ‘variation’ option if shoulders or elbows are sensitive.
4. Bent-Over Row Lower back issues? Stick with upright swing door movement.
5. Weighted Curl Up Squeeze the glutes and round shoulders forward to ensure core engagement.
6. Sit Kick Through Keep one hand on the chest for balance, don’t allow it to fling into the air.
Most importantly, have fun with it.
Stick some tunes on and aim to complete this workout 3 times next week. Please warm up and cool down first.
Comment “STRETCH” and we’ll send you our on-demand warm-up and cool down session.
Happy weekend!
A woman’s biggest fear of joining a gym might not be what you expect.
Hear how WAFA Founder Anna, after her own hip replacement, completely overhauled the SWEAT AND STRENGTH™ programme after realising how many women fear being asked to do movements they simply aren’t ready for yet.
Especially when it comes to the floor.
Because women don’t build confidence by feeling like they can’t do it.
They build confidence by knowing they can walk into a workout and start from where they are.
If this sounds familiar and it’s stopped you taking that first step beyond just going for a walk, drop us a PM and let’s chat.
And if you don’t feel ready to join just yet, come back in a couple of days because Anna will be sharing a short strength workout that you absolutely will be able to do.
