Publicly shaming a student has no place on the yoga mat.

Yes, some styles of yoga have specific ways of practicing, and teachers can absolutely uphold those principles. It’s their class.

BUT - there’s a difference between holding the integrity of a practice and humiliating the person in front of you. (For context, I was at the back of the class, so I would’ve likely gone unnoticed by the other students).

A yoga class is a space where people should be able to explore and be challenged without feeling judged or belittled.

Have you had a similar experience in a class? Let me know your thoughts on this. šŸ«¶šŸ‘‡

Curious about silent meditation retreats but intimidated by traditional ten day (or longer) vipassanas? I was lucky to learn from years ago that there are incredibly supportive Buddhist centres open to all levels of experience (you don’t need to sit cross legged on the floor!) run by the most lovely, open-hearted, funny, compassionate people. ā¤ļø

There’s still the structure of daily practice but it’s less intense. Walking meditation, mixed with seated, plus there can be other practices, depending on the retreat.
The teachings shared are deeply rooted in the tradition and aim to be accessible, even for the newbie meditator.

If you want to dip your toe into the profound benefits of awareness practices, check out these places:

Gaia House (I can’t tag them but you’ll find them on Google)

Returning to Moulin De Chaves today for another five night silent retreat! After the busyness and travel of the last week - camping in the Netherlands, revisiting Amsterdam, exploring Paris with a new friend - this week feels like the exhale I’ve been craving all year.

This week on retreat we’ll be exploring seated meditation with Martin Aylward, and also mindful, embodied movement with world renownedĀ conscious dance facilitator, Jo Hardy! So excited :)

Road-tripping with Victoria Thomas | Yoga, Strength and Injury education and we’ve been chatting about some of the biggest myths about yoga teachers…

šŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļø Community over competition: there’s room for all of us to shine! Collaboration makes us stronger and we can learn so much.

šŸ’Ŗ Yoga isn’t the only way we move. Our bodies thrive on variety, and mixing up our movement helps build strength, resilience, and longevity.

šŸ„‚ And yes… some yoga teachers enjoy a glass of wine, fizzy sweets (excellent road trip snack) and a dirty burger every now and then. Yoga is about awareness, not fitting into someone else’s expectations.

šŸ˜‚ Most importantly, we don’t take ourselves too seriously as we’re here for the bloopers and laughs too!

So tell me, you’re a yoga teacher and you stillā€¦šŸ‘‡

Your side plank isn’t just about holding the position—it’s about creating strength in the right places. šŸ’Ŗ

Here are a few tips that can make all the difference:

✨ Check your knee position. If your knees are too far forward, your hips don’t have room to extend. Line your knees up with your elbow so your hips can drive forward.

✨ Stack your elbow directly under your shoulder (or your wrist if you’re on your hand). This gives your shoulder the support it needs and helps you recruit your scapular stabilisers more effectively.

✨ Lift your hips forward and up towards the sky. Think of creating one long, straight line from your shoulders to your knees (or feet). That’s where you’ll feel the power.

✨ Avoid letting your shoulder round forwards or shrug up towards your ear (something that’s especially common if you’re hypermobile. I definitely have to think about this!).

Instead:

āœ”ļø Draw your shoulder blade down away from your ear.
āœ”ļø Feel the muscles underneath your armpit switch on (imagine you’re squeezing juice from a big, juicy orange šŸŠ).
āœ”ļø Keep the top of your arm bone centred in the shoulder socket to help protect your rotator cuff.

Small adjustments can completely change how this exercise feels and help you build strength where you actually want it.

Save this for your next side plank and let me know how it makes a difference!

Yoga teachers you will…

Spend so much time supporting your students… but may forget to support your own body.

Want to help students build strength and mobility… but may not feel confident teaching it.

Keep learning new poses… but the missing piece is often understanding how bodies move.

AND

Your students will ask for strength work… but you may not know where to start.

That’s exactly why I created my online 80hr *Expand Your Teaching* Yogalates CPD.

Deepen your understanding of anatomy, build confidence supporting different needs, and gain practical tools to help your students improve strength, stability and mobility.

SUPER EARLY BIRD ends tomorrow! Save **Ā£200**.

Loved receiving an email from retreater Jenny yesterday, who said…

ā€œWhat I gave as a gift to myself, unfurled into the most wonderful present. So much care, so much energy, kind attention to allow us to rest and relax. Time to think.Ā I am so grateful for that and the whole experience...it was so much more than I expected.ā€

Jenny has already booked for Morocco 2027! šŸŽ‰ are you joining us next May?

This might just be the most breathtaking view I’ve ever taught Yin Yoga with... yet. ✨

Teaching on retreat, overlooking the rolling hills of Portugal, has been nothing short of magical. Every breath, every moment, every sunset has felt so special. šŸ˜

I’d love to know... where’s your favourite place you’ve ever taught or practised yoga? šŸŒæšŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļø
