Their scores get added together - so the fewer faults and faster time becomes the winner. In the case of a draw it is the second round that counts

Second round has started with CPO Taylor - they go in reverse order from the first round

The Services Showjumping Final is tomorrow…but how did it come about?

Today the Services Showjumping Final is hosted by The London International Horse Show, at the ExCEL however it wasn’t always there or in this format!

You may have heard of the Royal Tournament which started back in 1880 at the Agricultural Hall, London and hosted 53 Regiments competing in events such as ‘tilting at the ring’ and ‘lemon cutting’ (we know these types of competitions as’Tent-Pegging’ today). The Musical Drive of the Royal Artillery started in 1896 and continued as a popular event until 1999. The first ‘all naval” Field Gun Display also appeared in 1896. In 1906 the Royal Tournament moved to Olympia where it stayed until 1999 (less for a period 1914-1946 due to the World Wars).

A new format Royal Tournament held at the Defence Animal Centre and the Combined Services Jumping Final at Olympia was founded by Major Richard ‘Dickie’ Waygood around 2000. It was open to Police Officers, soldiers and other serving personnel. There have been winners from all 3 Services and the Police over the years but only Major Waygood has won the title twice and Captain Mark Avison has won it three times. This he achieved on the 17hh Lochnagar, qualifying for the final at Olympia 6 times and winning 3 finals 2009 - 2011.

There could be a new contender for the multi-winner crown…Lance Bombardier Charlotte Pudge won it last year on her horse Cassinaro Dream who she brings again this year. Will she start a new era of back to back wins?

In two days, riders will be lining up for one of the biggest ShowJumping events on the military equestrian calendar - the Services Showjumping Final at The London International Horse Show…but who are they and how did they qualify?

For the Royal Navy:
Lieutenant Katie McManus and Arthur
Chief Petty Officer Amy Taylor and True Cavalier

For the British Army:
Major Ralph Pattie and Super Mario
Lance Bombardier Charlotte Pudge and Cassinaro Dream

For the Royal Air Force:
Wing Commander Sarah Boon and Tango
AS1 Sophie Richard’s and Sweet Banks Royal

For the Police:
Police Constable Megan Jeffrey and Baloubet Dimond Spring
Police Constable Laura Hughes and Pembrook Hollywood

Each rider earned points by attending one or more Showjumping Competitions at military events through the year; The RAF Championships, The Royal Navy Championships and the UK Armed Forces Championships. There is normally a fourth opportunity at the Royal Tournament hosted by the British Army but that was sadly cancelled this year. The top 8 scoring partnerships were invited to attend this years Services Showjumping Final. Some riders attended all three and built their scores up with consistency, others attended one and went bold, winning their class and hoping that was enough to carry them through. Whatever the tactics, they all demonstrated skill, accuracy and competitiveness to earn that coveted spot…will it be you next year?
