Last night we welcomed Jackson from Stevenage/Welwyn to the class.

We then worked firstly on getting some whipping action into our block/punch, which seemed to go well

The second half of the class we worked on speed. I asked everyone to loose some fine control in order to find out just how fast we could move. Next step there is to keep the speed and work the control and precision back in!

Student of the week this week was Matt.

Tournament training this Sunday at Simon B***e, What Works seminar is next Saturday!

Late recap of Wednesdays class.

Sensei James worked through some kumite drills with everyone, with the aim of getting into our target from outside their range, and then moving off the line to reduce retaliation.

Once we'd drilled these solo, we moved onto practice with a partner in lines, and then in free sparring.

Aruna was our student of the week this week.

Thanks to Valentina and Gamuchirai for visiting us!

Don't forget, Grading is this Sunday 12.30-2.30 at Simon B***e school, good luck to Yusuf going for his orange belt! Grading is open to everyone to train

Tonight's class we worked on a drill from black belt camp, working on "ren uke" or continuous blocking.

We started with working on the basic form of the blocks we'd be using, outside then inside blocking.

Stage 2, was working with a partner to get used to the principle of parrying then moving the partners punch.

Stage 3 was adding a push, as a substitute for a slightly more serious follow up.

Stage 4 was changing the attack to a haymaker.

Before we finished up with some tag sparring, we talked through what the next stages at black belt camp were (elbows, and free movement)

Student of the week was Paul!

Sunday is Sensei Andys Empi seminar, next Sunday is the grading, and then we've got Sensei Steve's What Works seminar not long after. All details on Stack!

Kata week this week, so Sensei James had everyone warm up with Taigyoku Shodan/First Kata to a slow pace, working through several steps to each count, before working back down to single steps to the count.

We then progressed onto more grade appropriate kata groups, with Second Kata, Bassai Dai, Seiunchin, and Empi all getting a showing over the course of the session.

Matt was Student of the Week this week.

Sensei Andys kata seminar is next Sunday, and remember to keep an eye out for the details for Sensei Steve's practical karate seminar 17th October!

Tonight we welcomed the majority of the class back from their summer break.

After congratulating Paul on grading tonhis blue belt on sunday, we ran through a quick warm up and then we took advantage of the Air Con being out to have a good old sweat session by knocking the dust off everyone's basics with a run through of everything in heiko datchi

I was especially impressed with Timur, which was awarded student of the week.

Dont forget all the events on Stack!

In mid-June, several of our Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian senior group volunteered to complete a Homes set-up with our charity partner, RizeUp Australia.

RizeUp provides all the practical items needed for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence to make a fresh start, including furniture and other household items that help transform empty houses into homes.

When each of our GKR teams arrived at their location, they were greeted by a RizeUp driver, an empty house and a truck filled with flatpacks and homewares. The teams set about unloading the truck, assembling the flatpacks, making beds, filling pantries and carefully decorating the space. This included fitting out children’s bedrooms and providing them with the materials needed to start at a new school.

After 4+ hours of work at each location, the transformation from house to home left a lasting memory for all involved. With the knowledge that a family would be entering their newly furnished home in the coming days, each team member took comfort in knowing that they had helped create a new beginning for someone in need.

We are incredibly grateful to RizeUp for the work they do and for the opportunity to be involved in their Homes program. We also appreciate the amazing support shown by all of our students and instructors who participate in the Stop Domestic & Family Violence Purple Belt Campaign. Your involvement means a lot, not only to RizeUp and the families they help, but also to GKR Karate as a whole.

If you would like to volunteer with RizeUp to help setting up Homes, information can be found here https://www.rizeup.com.au/volunteer
