Competing in elite sport for 23 years, which included 3 European Championship medals, 3 Commonwealth Games medals and competing at 4 World Championships teaches you a lot and provides some incredible opportunities and experiences.

Here are 5 lesson that I took into my life after sport that allowed me to continue having success after retirement.

Consistency beats motivation, every time!

Motivation shows up when it feels good. Elite sport doesn’t run on how you feel. It runs on showing up on the days you don’t want to, because the work doesn’t care about your mood.

The people around you decide how far you go!

Coaches, teammates, family, the standard of people around you sets the ceiling. I didn’t get anywhere near where I did on my own and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

Feedback is a gift, not an attack!

Coaches correct you constantly in elite sport and you learn fast that taking it personally slows you down. The athletes who improved quickest were the ones who could hear the truth without their ego getting in the way.

Pressure reveals preparation!

You don’t rise to the occasion. You fall to the level of your preparation. Competition day doesn’t create pressure, it just exposes whether the work was actually done.

Your identity needs to be bigger than your result!

Results go up, results go down. If your entire sense of self is built on the scoreboard, every bad day becomes a crisis. The athletes who lasted longest, mentally, had something beyond the sport holding them together.

🌟 Meet the Leaders of Our Leadership Programme 🌟
Our club is powered not just by brilliant coaches, but by a team of young leaders who are growing, learning, and shaping the future of our community. These are the role models who bring energy, kindness, and initiative into every session — the ones who step up, support others, and show what leadership looks like in action.

Each leader in our programme is developing skills that go far beyond the gym: communication, teamwork, problem‑solving, confidence, and the ability to inspire those around them. Whether they’re helping a gymnast master a new skill, supporting a coach on the floor, or creating a positive atmosphere in class, they’re making a real difference.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing you to the incredible individuals behind our leadership programme — their journeys, their strengths, and the impact they’re already making within our club.

Stay tuned as we shine a spotlight on the leaders who help make our club stronger every single day. 💙🤍
