New data shows that children from the most deprived communities are significantly less likely to leave primary school able to swim 25 metres and self-rescue, despite these being essential life-saving skills.
No child should miss out on learning vital water safety and swimming skills because of their background.
RLSS UK is calling for a national drowning prevention strategy, a dedicated Minister for Water Safety and Drowning Prevention, and urgent action to tackle inequalities in access to swimming education that are increasing the risk of preventable drowning deaths.
It's time for coordinated action to ensure every child has access to the skills they need to stay safe around in, on, and around water.

⭐️ Water Helpers ⭐️
The reason our youngest swimmers get off to such a great start. 🙌🏻
This is just a small selection of the amazing water helper team we have here at The Swim School. We like to have small class sizes of 6 and usually this would be taught by our teacher on the side, with 2 water helpers in the water too. (Depending on the level ability of the class)
This means we do not have to rely on big, bulky arm bands or waste any time taking them on and off during class.
Our water helpers are there to provide support, immediate feedback, help with body position and alignment and correct technique as soon as necessary.
They are an extension of our teacher on the side, and help us create a safe, proactive and fun environment in all of our lessons.
So don’t worry if this is your child’s very first independent class or you’re worried they may be nervous without you. That’s what we’re here for and look forward to turning those nerves into excitement the more we see you.
Has your son/daughter just turned 3 or just about to?

🏊♀️ CAN YOUR CHILD REALLY SWIM?
If you watched BBC News today, you may have seen the report highlighting the worrying number of children leaving primary school unable to swim 25 metres.
But we think there’s another really important question parents should be asking…
Can your child swim confidently and independently when they can’t touch the bottom?
Being able to swim one length of a pool is a fantastic achievement — but swimming lessons shouldn’t stop there.
💙 Can they get themselves to the side if they fall into deep water?
💙 Can they tread water?
💙 Can they swim when they’re tired?
💙 Can they swim without relying on floats or an adult?
💙 Are they confident in water where their feet cannot touch the bottom?
The BBC report also highlighted the lack of school swimming provision, with some children receiving just 10–20 lessons during an entire school year.
School swimming is incredibly valuable, but large groups and mixed abilities can make it difficult to give every child the individual attention and practice they need.
This is why regular swimming lessons outside of school can be so important.
We know children have lots of activities competing for their time — football, dancing, gymnastics, tennis and so much more. And they’re all fantastic.
But swimming is different.
🏊♂️ Swimming is an essential life skill.
It isn’t about becoming the fastest swimmer.
It isn’t about winning races.
It isn’t even just about swimming 25 metres.
It’s about giving your child the skills, confidence and independence to keep themselves safer around water.
Please don’t wait until your child can swim one length and think, “That’s it, they’re safe.”
Keep going. Keep building their confidence. Keep developing their skills.
Because the water doesn’t care whether your child is a beginner, can swim 25 metres or has passed a swimming level.
Water safety is a skill for life. 💙
