Report on Dutch match
On the first weekend of June we checked in at the Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa, known as the home of the Dambusters Squadron in the Second World War, on a gloriously sunny afternoon in readiness for our two day match with the Dutch lawyers on the Hotchkin and Bracken courses at Woodhall Spa Golf Club. We were bolstered by the inclusion in our team of some low handicap newly joined members of the LSGC. Monday morning we played on the parkland of the Bracken course, a layout with generous fairways but fiendish greens. In the afternoon we took on the Hotchkin, which has long been rated in the Top 100 courses in the world. Playing fourballs helped to mitigate some of the challenges and LSGC ended the day with a commanding lead.
Tuesday brought some rain and foursomes in the morning on the Hotchkin. Singles on the Bracken in the afternoon saw the Dutch narrowly win, but our strong first day meant that we won the overall match. We travelled to nearby Horncastle for a final dinner at Magpies Restaurant at which our captain, Gwyn George, received the trophy from our Dutch friends.
We look forward to a fresh challenge next year in the northern part of the Netherlands.
Report on match with the Brussels Bar
Our match with the Brussels Bar dates back to 1963, making it our oldest international match. We play for the Challenge de l’Amitié, a splendid trophy donated many, many years ago. This year the match come to Hayling GC, where we enjoyed two days on the glorious links layout. One of our members, Michael McCabe, is captain there this year and he and the club made us very welcome over the two days of the match at the end of June. We played two rounds on Thursday in greensomes and foursomes formats, pursued in the morning by the ladies playing in their club championship. We had a good morning and the Belgians a good afternoon, leaving the match tied at the end of the day. We all repaired for dinner at the Fat Olives restaurant in nearby Emsworth and enjoyed an extremely fine meal prepared especially for us.
On Friday morning we took a break from the golf and travelled into Portsmouth to visit the Historic Dockyards. The Belgians spent a happy couple of hours on HMS Victory learning how the French had been given a good pasting in the Channel. Back on the golf course in the afternoon, we played the singles matches and managed to win by the narrowest of margins, receiving the trophy at a closing dinner in the clubhouse at Hayling.
Next year we will be playing the 60th edition of the match in Belgium.

We had a good day at The Caversham GC for the meet and greet yesterday.
15 including 3 guests.
Highlight of the day was that Chander Bagga (here with Gwyn and Douglas Howie) had a hole in one on the second hole. Comp was won by Richard Battrick with 40 stableford points. There were prizes for best aggregate scores on the par 3s, longest drive and nearest the pin which were won by 2 newish members and a guest.
