Personal story from my days in coaching

It was one moment that made me evaluate what coaching actually was early on in my career

People go through horrendous experiences as my client did in this story.

I was underprepared.

Not that it was my role to be a counsellor but I wanted to be better able to support within scope of practice.

Coaching humans in an authentic way means having conversations that are emotional by nature.

Being able connect on a level with clients really is an obvious key to retention and thus the opportunity to impact your clients

It's common for coaches to face moments of doubt, even when they know their methods work. That feeling can sometimes lead to self-sabotage, like hesitating to take on a new client or holding back from sharing their best insights. This isn't about a lack of skill, but often a quiet inner battle with confidence. We all see patterns in ourselves and our clients. For you, what's the most frequent self-sabotaging pattern you've noticed in coaches, or even in your own journey?

This reaction isn’t about Stephen Bartlett and it’s not about wine

Zoom out there’s a bigger problem here

What if you’re sold the dream of optimisation

What it looks like, what it should feel like but more importantly how and what you’re going to need to get there.

Ultimately optimisation is different from one person to the next. For so many different reasons.

Whilst I choose to drink moderately and selected drinks - others choose to not drink at all.

Each to their own

However marginalisation or ostracisation for not either being optimal or at least seeking to be optimal is sneaking into certain areas of society

Least of all the health and fitness industry which - by all intense and purposes - should be supporting individuals’ autonomy and own journeys without using guilt shame or fear to leverage a prescribed optimal life

Do as you will - find your own optimal - use a coach to help you find your optimal - and if that changes - adjust with it.

If you want to make a deeper connection with clients

Hold a stronger relationship

Retain clients

Support in a more impactful way

You need to have values (authentic ones not adopted ones)

As a focus point in and through your coaching practice

You’re own values but critically your clients

I’ll make a bold claim - if you haven’t got your clients values by the end of session 2, the onboarding call or the first check in session you’re immediately on the back foot as a coach

We cover all this in the Phnx community and more with some tasty morsels of coaching on my YouTube channel

It can be challenging as a coach to get this right

Balancing the part of supporting the clients emotionally

From psychological perspective there’s lots to consider

Confidence - resilience - stress - values - communication - empathy

The deeper side of coaching can take its toll on a coach

Especially if you have several clients that need that support

Where do you go for the right approach as a coach?

What’s within your scope of practice?

How do you look after yourself?

Something is coming your way - get excited about it and if want to make sure you don’t miss it

You need to be on the email list (link in bio)

It’d love to know your thoughts on this

Supervision is something that is lacking in the health and fitness industry

It might be because there is no perceived immediate return of investment financially for a coach it might be because it’s not made the professional development yet as other services have, I hold hope

Having been in the industry 20 years I can say with certainty that I wouldn’t have made it this far without supervision

It’s guided me into an place that has allowed me to deepen my coaching practice with confidence, retain my clients and also have impact beyond the physical and nutritional aspect of coaching

It’s been part of what has led me to have a wider scope and be able to deliver peer to peer structured supervision and education to other coaches in colleges, academies and privately.

I think supervision is the next move for this industry to make - I know of some fantastic individuals who are out there doing this and I’m all for it.

Every coach faces challenges, but often the most significant ones come from within.

We all have that inner voice, the ‘inner critic’, and sometimes it can turn into a ‘saboteur in waiting’. Ignoring it gives it more power.

This isn’t about eliminating that voice, it’s about understanding and managing it.

When you master your emotional landscape, you not only boost your own performance but also empower your clients to achieve greater success and well-being.

Morning Yap: The battle between the love for a bit of chaos and the yearn to have control

It’s a real thing

Sometimes people are naturally drawn to chaos or control

They have their reasons

We all do

This isn’t to make a coach a therapist but at some point in a coaching journey the conversation of control and chaos is worth having

Where there maybe some obstacles or slowing down of progress because of chaos

Or where there maybe some issues arising from rigidity or control

You can’t ignore these as a coach - what’s great is that AI and chatgpt won’t have the humanistic capabilities of picking up these subtle nuances

So position yourself better moving forward in the industry to do that

Stay within scope always

But please be courageous enough as a coach to have the conversations that really matter and can make the difference

If you want to come into the PHNX community there’s loads of videos and resources that cover emotional intelligence in coaching - real, applicable and beneficial for your clients you and your business
