One of the greatest, controversial and charismatic tennis players of all time will be in The Sporting Club house on the eve of Wimbledon 2026.

JOHN MCENROE is not only one of the most famous tennis players in sporting history but he has been now for many years the most popular tennis pundit and commentator on worldwide TV.

A seven time Grand Slam singles champion - three times Wimbledon and four times the US Open - with 77 singles titles to his name and ranked world number one for 170 weeks, he has also won five Wimbledon titles in the men's doubles, with four more at the US open, 77 doubles titles also and the only man in history to simultaneously be ranked number one in the world in both singles and doubles. He also won the mixed doubles at the French Open and the Davis Cup five times.

In a golden era that saw him pit his wits against Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker, Mats Wilander and many more Grand Slam winners, John played and beat them all.

His hi-octane on-court behaviour frequently landed him in trouble with umpires and tennis authorities which made him even more watchable as a sportsman and, as he mellowed and grew older, so his popularity rose more.

Acting legend James Cosmo has become a great friend of The Sporting Club, which is why, on 14th May, members and their guests will enjoy an evening with James at our Soho base at L'Escargot Soho, in which he will share stories from his long acting career, including working with Brad Pitt, Mel Gibson, Peter O'Toole, Ewan McGregor, and many, many more.

The legendary Harry Redknapp will share stories from his career in football, first as a player mainly at West Ham, and then as a manager at Bournemouth, West Ham, Portsmouth, Southampton, Spurs and QPR among others.

And then as a TV personality and all-round raconteur. In fact, not only did Harry become King of the Jungle in the 2018 series of "I'm a Celebrity ....Get Me Out Of Here," but he has also just returned from the recent series in South Africa.

Throw in the fact that the football World Cup begins on 11th June, and all of Harry's hilarious anecdotes - I've heard them all having hosted Harry dinners many times and they still make us laugh - plus his latest jungle antics, and these two events are not to be missed.

On last night's evidence Declan Rice is 100% in the starting X1 (alongside Kane and Pickford) and Bukayo Saka is looking good for that left wing berth.

But there will be plenty of top English stars sweating on whether they have done enough to gain England manager Thomas Tuchel's favour.

Now that's a huge call BUT, luckily, The Sporting Club, already has someone who has done exactly that, and at home at Wembley.

𝗦𝗶𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘁 could never have imagined, 60 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗻 from that 1966 triumph, that he'd be the last man standing from the last England team to become world champions.

But he is and, on 10th June - the day before the world cup kicks off - he will be telling his story and the story of how that magnificent England team won the world cup at Quaglinos in St James, London.

It's going to be a very 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗶𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗳𝗳 📸 for all guests, 𝗮 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 and an in-depth chat with the great man.

We may not win it this year either, but we can at least bask in the glory of '66 and hope that the class of 2026 can emulate Sir Geoff and all his illustrious teammates.
