Most people overestimate how much strength training they need for a longer life.
A new study tracked 147,374 adults for up to 30 years.
- About 90 to 120 minutes of strength training a week lined up with the biggest drop in death risk, a 13 percent lower risk from any cause.
- The same range showed a 27 percent lower risk of death from neurological disease such as Alzheimer's.
- More than 120 minutes a week added little extra.
- Strength plus regular cardio gave the largest benefit, up to 45 percent lower risk of death.
Two or three short sessions a week is enough to hit the range.
