What if the best way to help children in need was to give their mums cash? Dr Miriam Laker-Oketta firmly believes it's the way forward...

Dr Miriam has heard all the negative arguments.

"Two of the key things people say is people who are poor are lazy, so why give them money... And the second one is, people will waste the money."

But Miriam says it's really important that the money is completely unconditional.

"People know what is best for them," she says. "We give them the cash and let them decide what to use it for."

It's a radical idea - and Miriam says people are initially very surprised that there are no strings attached. "People are like, are you sure?" She says.

Born and raised in Uganda, Miriam initially wanted to be a nurse, because she had never seen a female doctor. Her father persuaded her to train as a doctor instead.

But she soon realised that poverty was destroying her patients' health. She remembers a woman in labour for three days, whose baby died because her family couldn't afford to hire a bicycle to bring her to hospital.

"It looked to me like cash was medicine," she says. "You prescribe cash, and you see all these changes."

She's since conducted research in Kenya which showed giving cash directly led to around a 50 percent reduction in infant mortality - that's comparable to programmes like malaria nets and childhood vaccination.

"And at the end of the day," says Miriam, "If those are prescribed, why are we not prescribing cash for women that are pregnant?"

KEEP MOVING

It is so important to keep moving, particularly your hips, as we spend so much time throughout
our days seated, which has massive impact on our mobility or lack of. And we don't want to be
in later life having hobbling across roads or using walking sticks.

We don't have to do that
if we can keep moving ourselves while we can. So my classes, Monday to Friday, every morning,
little bit of movement, bit of meditation, lot of lovely sound and mantra.

A GENTLE LIFT

This is a classic Kriya, which is like a very specific sequence of exercises to help raise K***alini in quick order.

This exercise here, the chair, really helps open out the K***a, the cave that is deep within where she is said to reside.

We do all these lovely exercises for the spine, help open up the back of the heart, the front of the heart, and then we end up meditating.

When we're most relaxed, that's when our K***alini is going to flow.

It's not always like a great big fireworks rising, sometimes it's just a gentle lift.

MORNING RITUALS

How you start your day has such a massive impact on the rest of your day and having a ritual or
that you follow really helps keep you in check.
