Spending money on an expensive mattress is a waste if you’re passing out on the sofa

I had a chat with a client last week

He’s looking to spend a few k on a mattress

Which he initially thought was a lot of money

But he’s also told me when he sleeps more, and if not more, better…

He’s a different man

His old mattress was a Simba mattress, a solid hybrid, I have one and love it

But you can’t just buy it and forget about it

It needs rotated,

His is 5 years old and hasn’t been turned,

Leaving a big dent where he sleeps

We went on about the next level up at 2-3k,

Then I mentioned the Eight Sleep…

One of the market leaders for sleep quality, sleep tracking and cooling

Pretty awesome

But who are we kidding?

This guy is on late calls to Singapore,

Taking them on the sofa not to wake the family

Then watching TV to decompress,

Only to find in the middle of the night he’s still there after passing out and his wife not able to wake him

This isn’t a mattress problem,

It’s a system and wind down problem

So we have set boundaries around a few things

Have wind down routine that is a slow off ramp to the day instead of hitting a brick wall

Blue light blocking glasses, dim lights, 1 TV show limit, no late food, and most importantly…

Get in your actual bed

Sometimes buying the best thing isn’t the best play

Guys with supplement stacks more expensive than their monthly food shop

The best stress management biotech when they’re still flat out for 12-14 hour days

All this stuff is cool,

But if you are so stressed you are at your capacity,

No tech or supplement will fix it

I had another call with a client who’s supplement list has evolved to 15 supplements

At that stage, you don’t know what’s working and it’s overwhelming

Focus on less first, then add more in later

And sometimes that’s just putting the phone down and getting to bed on time

You ever passed out on the sofa because work is crushing you so much?

You’re going to be bad when you start

Making the decision is easy, the reality is harder

I’ve had clients motivated when they start to get back on it

Hitting the gym,

Eating some good meals,

Cutting out some or all the booze

Things are good, then life happens

So they default to what they know… Work

Because they’re good at work, It pays them, usually pretty well

They know what they’re doing, they understand the environment I’ve worked with 7, 8 and 9 figure entrepreneurs

They wipe the floor with me when it comes to money and understanding markets

But when it comes to health or the gym… They feel lost

They apply the same effort to a broken system

And that’s where they go wrong They expect to be good first

So they apply more effort

Which doesn’t work

Go slow to go fast

If you can’t kick a football on target, kicking it harder will only make you miss worse

Slow down, be bad first and...

Understand it’s part of the game

So it turns out I’m the “fun police”

No fun when daddy’s playing! That’s what gets thrown around at home when we’re learning new games

I like structure and rules, it helps me with clarity

Especially when it comes to games

Companies spend a lot of time and money on development and they know how the game should be played

A 7 year old doesn’t

We were playing the Mr Beast game…

It’s for 10 year olds

A stretch for him, but not impossible, especially with help

That’s where growth is

I explained to him after the emotions calmed down

“Rules are there to help"

"’m here to help”

“The tough feelings are normal"

"You’ve never played a game like this before so it’s going to be harder than you want it to be”

And that’s where the pride comes in

Learning how to play and getting better

It worked with the Horrible Histories board game

Same issue…

But when fun police came in,

He liked the game even more

With men working on their health and energy,

They know the program,

But they modify it, to try to make it better,

Then it breaks

And they wonder why it’s not working

I’ve designed a simple and effective program based on what I’ve seen work and not work over the years

Guys don’t need lots of group calls to succeed,

They don’t need to study the ins and outs of thermodynamics and the little things that are nice to know

They need to do the simple work, week in week out…

Even when travelling

Simple is scalable, complexity kills consistency

But they change the rules,

They do a crazy workout and can’t walk for days,

Or get into extreme fasting, fancy supplements or testing

Usually in high times of stress

But those times are when you need less going on,

A simple approach to not overthink

And I’m all for trying new things,

But only after the basics are taken care of

The rules are there for a reason,

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel

Are you an old school car lover?

Ai will have 2 types of users

1 group will go all in on it,

Not consider anything else,

Let it do everything for them

And I get why

It’s simple, easy and removes friction

The thing is, we need friction to grow

Plants need wind and stress to grow bigger and stronger roots

Humans need load and stress to get stronger

So with Ai, I love it,

But the risk is I get too dependant on it,

Too comfortable

And miss the real experience of failing and learning

What’s your thoughts on this?

I had a call last week with a man who's got a lot of success on paper

Bigger business, bigger exit ahead of him, capital behind him

And halfway through the call he described the life he actually wants

Physically in good shape

Energy in the evenings

Playing with his kids without checking the clock to see how long until bed

Which is roughly my Tuesday afternoon

I've got the body, the basketball, the time with my son

I'm short on the money

He's got the money but he's crashing at seven every night with a packet of crisps

Two men on a call, each holding the thing the other one wants

Neither of us is doing it wrong

We've both just spent our attention where it was easiest to spend

The uncomfortable part is that his gap costs him more than mine costs me

I'm building the money

It can be slower than I like, but I know how

He's been trying to build the health for twenty years with all the resources anyone could want, and it's the one thing that hasn't responded

Money compounds if you keep going

Health compounds too

It just also depreciates if you neglect it... waiting for a quieter quarter

A client logged a session in my training app last week

Everything ticked

2 exercise chest superset, all sets complete, weights logged

On paper, most people think that's enough

I know the demands... it's not what you're doing, it's how you're doing it

So I asked how his shoulder felt

Then he told me he'd had discomfort through the whole thing

He wasn't hiding it

He just didn't think it was worth a message, and I've told him a dozen times to flag anything

Most guys think they have to push through, like pain or discomfort is part of it

And it can be, but suffering more than you need to isn't

The numbers said the week was fine

But the client wasn't

An app would have marked that complete and served him the same superset next

Tuesday... then the Tuesday after, until something actually tore or broke

Men filter their own problems before reporting them

The filter is set far too high

By the time you hear about it, it's usually well past the point where it was easy to fix

Same in a business. Same at home

I fixed it in about ten minutes

Chest in front of the shoulder, stabilise, stop pulling through the front of the joint

He said good to know

But then I subbed it out while it recovers

"Pushing through" isn't a badge of honour

He'd have been six weeks into an injury before that made it into a check in

If you're training on your own and something's been niggling for a while, DM me and I'll tell you what to look at

I default to talking about macros and technique and nobody cares

Protein targets, tempo, progressive overload, how to fix a press up

I'm good at it. Eleven years and 500 clients good at it

But I've noticed I reach for it when I'm tired, or under pressure, or not sure what to say

Because it's safe

Nobody can argue with a protein target. If someone pushes back I can point at the research and I can prove I know what I'm talking about... but again, no one cares

The identity stuff gives me far more back, and it's hard to say out loud

If that makes me look weak or not as good as I thought...

That's a spotlight on my weak links, no study or data can back that up

So I fall back to the thing I can't lose at

Every man I coach does a version of this

The founder who defaults to work when everything else is uncertain, because work is where he's already proven, and it gets him paid

The one who trains harder when his life gets complicated, because training is the one variable he controls

It's sedation, a numbing effect

It isn't laziness though... it's the opposite

You go to the place where you're most competent

The problem is that the thing you're avoiding is usually the thing that would actually move

I'm 40 this year and I'm still catching myself doing it

Find a reason big enough to create change, with the identity needed to change

A great book on this is Simon Sineks book "Start with Why"

The work needed to be done is easy when you have a why big enough

Have you read the book? One of my favourites - link in the comments

This is the main reason you’re not happy with your results

You’re looking for the perfect plan

You think you’re missing the diet, the workout plan, the supplements…

But it’s none of those things directly,

It’s the reason behind them,

You’re motivator,

Your why

A workout plan, a diet…

They’re all free now,

Chat GPT has the answers

But none of them make you do the identity work needed to stick to them

20 years is a long time

The guys I work with are happy to pay that price when it comes to building wealth and securing a healthy retirement

But they get distracted when it comes to doing the work on their health

Navigating family, work seasons, deals, travel

None of those things hide in a diet or workout plan

They’re all deeper than that

They all come from your daily actions and how you show up

How you see yourself

Yea, you can go all in and do the work

You can get in shape in 90-180 days

But staying in the game, thriving and being healthy for decades…

So your family benefit from a version of you that operates on a different level?

That’s where the real results come from

Quick wins are setting you up to fail long term

Mounjaro, Ozempic, Reta, GLP-1’s

They’re proving that Calories do matter

People taking these thing just aren’t hungry,

So they don’t eat

And you can’t deny the fact… it works

People are losing weight

But what these people are missing is this…

They’re not losing just fat, a chunk of the weight is muscle

They’re malnourished because they still haven’t fixed the underlying eating patterns, they’re just eating less

Over time, they’re losing bone density too

But here’s what I’m not actually mad at…

If you’re carrying a lot more than a few lbs,

I’m talking 10, 20, 30 lbs or more…

Get that weight off first

The weight is doing more damage than how you lose it

Unpopular opinion… Eat McDonald’s, I don’t care

Lose the weight first

The hard part??

It’s not eating less,

These drugs prove that

It’s changing the lifestyle habits to support it

Men envy guys in shape,

Looking awesome in a good suit, a fitted shirt, or on the beach with their top off

But what most guys don’t envy is the lifestyle required to get there

The identity of the guy who does the work,

Who says no when it’s easy to say yes

Who builds a life around their priorities and health goals

Wanting it isn’t enough, saying the goal out loud isn’t enough

So by all means, take these things (consult with a doctor first)

Just don’t pretend that they are the he end of your problems

There’s stil work to be done

Same with steroids…

They aren’t going to make you jacked if you don’t start training hard, eating well and sleeping and managing stress

If you disagree? Let’s battle in the comments section,

But I’m confident in what I’m saying here

There’s no such thing as a free lunch

You can’t escape hard work,

Just make sure you choose it as much as you can

Sat down with a client in person last week...

We hadn't made much progress in months

He'd been travelling, work had gone sideways, and he'd stopped replying to most of what I sent

Then he said something I wasn't expecting

That I'd been as proactive as anyone could have been, and he'd given me nothing back

That it wasn't on me, it was on him

Most coaches would take that and feel better about themselves

The old me would have loved that lack of ownership...

But I don't think it's quite right

Because there's only so hard you can push before you start becoming part of the problem

By the fourth "have you managed to get that session in", I'm not accountability anymore

I'm another thing in his inbox making him feel like he's failing

I've done it before with other clients

Pushed, got nothing, decided the guy was too busy, and quietly stopped

Which then gives him a fair reason to point at me

So the truth is it was both of us

He'd run out of bandwidth and stopped communicating

I'd read the silence and started pushing instead of asking what was actually going on

The thing that fixed it wasn't a new program

It was one conversation where we both told the truth about what had happened

I tell every client the same thing early on, before we talk about anything else

This only works if we're both honest with each other

I'll call you out on yours if you give me yours

And you have to actually tell me what's happening

Because I can't help a ghost
