🦢The secret to The Swan is practice.🦢
I realise this is a very cheeky answer, but hear me out.
The only way to get better at Pilates is to practise Pilates … properly, as it was intended.
Classical Pilates is a system of exercises that are meant to be studied together, not in isolation. It is not enough to just do Reformer or just do Mat. You need a tailor-made workout that addresses your needs, goals, issues, and ability. A personalised, tailor-made workout with a comprehensively trained Classical Pilates teacher will move you closer to your goals — whether that is to do a better Swan or simply to move and feel better.
To improve it, you must break it down into its parts. It is a back extension or arch, and in order to have a strong arch, you need to truly understand what your body needs to achieve this.
Are you stiff? If so, you need to stretch your back, shoulders, and chest to make progress in your Swan.
Or are you flexible? If so, you will need to strengthen your powerhouse and work on your lift to ensure you are not hanging in your flexibility.
Both of these issues, along with personal corrections, should be addressed in your sessions and classes.
Do not just do millions of Swans in an attempt to improve your Swan. Use the rest of the system!
If you need to stretch and open your chest and shoulders, perhaps you need to work on the Spine Corrector or with the Push Through Bar. If you are flexible and need strength and lift, perhaps you need Leg Springs or the High Chair to help you strengthen and develop control.
Tackle your goals and the exercises you aspire to do well by understanding their components and finding other places in the system to work on these components.
Progress is not always quick, but it is always satisfying.
Allow yourself the time and enjoy the process!
So many exciting things happening
