Kyokushin Karate is often considered a superior style by its practitioners due to its emphasis on full-contact sparring, intense physical and mental conditioning, and focus on practical, powerful techniques. These elements are designed to foster a resilient "indomitable spirit" and practical fighting skills.
Key Reasons Kyokushin is Highlighted as "Best"
Full-Contact Sparring: Unlike many other traditional karate styles that use point-based or light-contact sparring, Kyokushin practices full-contact fighting (kumite) without protective gear (except a mouth guard and groin protection), which prepares practitioners for the reality of a real fight.
Intense Conditioning and Toughness: The training regimen is famously rigorous and demanding. It includes body hardening drills, breaking techniques (tameshiwari), and extreme endurance tests like the 100-man kumite, which builds exceptional physical strength, stamina, and a high pain tolerance.
Practical & Powerful Techniques: The style, developed by founder Masutatsu Oyama from a blend of Shotokan and Goju-Ryu elements, focuses on straightforward, effective strikes, including powerful low kicks, body punches, and knee strikes. The objective in competition is to knock the opponent down or out.
Mental Discipline and Philosophy: The philosophy, encapsulated by the term "Osu" (meaning to push and endure), emphasizes discipline, perseverance, humility, and self-improvement. This character development extends beyond the dojo, creating mental toughness and resilience in everyday life challenges.
Strong Foundation for Other Combat Sports: The rigorous conditioning and emphasis on powerful, real-world striking makes Kyokushin an excellent base for cross-training in other martial arts like Kickboxing or MMA, as seen with notable fighters such as Georges St-Pierre (GSP) and Andy Hug.
Ultimately, the "best" martial art depends on an individual's goals. For those seeking an extremely tough, realistic, and character-building full-contact style, Kyokushin is widely regarded as a top choice.
