We express our deepest gratitude to Madame General Consul, Mihaela Savu, and the all team from the General Consulate of Romania in Birmingham for organising the presentation event of ROTA's training programme "Engaging with Roma Communities - Working Together for a Better Inclusion".
It was overwhelming to see such a numerous and high profile audience interested in an issue that is generally ignored in the British society.
Thank you all!

Last week, on 10th of December, on the International Human Rights Day, ROTA launched in partnership with the Consulatul General al României la Londra the training course "Engaging with Roma Communities - Working together for a better inclusion"
“Engaging with Roma Communities” is a capacity-building programme developed for central and local government authorities, as well as other public service providers, who regularly interact with Roma communities and individuals. It addresses the challenges these institutions face in establishing open, effective, and inclusive channels of communication within the framework of service delivery.
The training course seeks to enhance participants’ comprehension of the contemporary realities faced by Roma communities and to foster a more informed, evidence-based, and culturally sensitive approach in the design and implementation of their future professional activities.
At the conclusion of the course, a set of recommendations will be presented; however, our aspiration is that, through collaboration with participants, more effective solutions can be identified and implemented, solutions that will foster enhanced social cohesion and strengthen relationships with Roma communities.
The structure of the training course is the following:
• Ice Breaker: after the participants’ introduction, they will be asked about Roma Myths and Stereotypes;
• Roma History and Culture, where are mentioned the origins, slavery, Holocaust, forced assimilation in Eastern Block countries, culture, traditions and social norms. Also in this section it will be presented a short selection of relevant Romani words and expressions;
• Roma identity – a challenging approach in explaining the etymology and meaning of the terms Gypsy/Gypsyism/Antigypsyism and also explaining the differences between the Roma and Romanians;
• Quiz: a short quiz about the things we just have learned;
• Roma in UK and Europe – an insight of the situation of the Roma nowadays and statistics analyse;
• Transgenerational Trauma, where are explained the consequences of the rough history, discrimination and abuses that made many Roma communities to develop alternative social systems;
• Discrimination Chain, which presents and analyses the causes and effects of the discrimination;
• Case Study followed by Role play: this section of each delivered training course will be special designed up to the professional profile of the participants (e.g. health, education, police, child protection, etc.)
• Community Reparations, where is explained the Community Reparations principle and the need of a specific approach in service delivery process to Roma:
• Conclusions and recommendations followed by Q&A.
The training course will take approximately 4 hours, including two brakes of 15 minutes. ROTA prefers face-to-face training courses, with 15-20 participants, but we could commit for hybrid events, too.
ROTA will deliver the training course free-of-charge, but the event organisers will support the participation costs of the ROTA trainers (travel, subsistence and accommodation in case is needed).
