WHAT IF YOUR REHAB FELT MORE LIKE TRAINING? 👀

Rehab doesn’t always need to be a collection of isolated corrective exercises.

Imagine an assessment shows:

➡️ A hip shift to the right
➡️ Reduced strength/control through the right hip
➡️ Restriction through the right lat/shoulder
➡️ Reduced trunk and sling control

Rather than treating each area completely separately, we can start integrating them back into movement.

One way we can do this is by borrowing from PHA (Peripheral Heart Action) training and building a rehab tri-set:

1️⃣ LOWER BODY
Lateral/single-leg hip strength
→ Build frontal-plane hip strength and pelvic control.

2️⃣ UPPER BODY
Shoulder/scapular strength
→ Restore upper-body control while the lower body recovers.

3️⃣ CORE
Loaded side-plank / lateral core work
→ Build trunk strength and improve force transfer between the upper and lower body.

LOWER → UPPER → CORE → REPEAT 🔁

The assessment determines what we need to train.

PHA simply gives us an interesting way of organising the rehab.

It allows us to build strength, work capacity and movement quality without turning rehab into 45 minutes of isolated corrective exercises.

Because eventually…

Rehab should start looking like training. 💪

For me, it’s never just about treating where it hurts.

After nearly 20 years working in fitness, strength & conditioning and sports therapy, the biggest thing I’ve learnt is that treatment is only one part of the process.

At LMM, a session might include:

→ Understanding what’s actually causing the problem
→ Assessing how you move
→ Hands-on treatment where appropriate
→ Restoring mobility and range of movement
→ Corrective exercise
→ Strength work
→ Building confidence back into movement

Sometimes you need treatment.

Sometimes you need to get stronger.

Most of the time, you need a bit of both.

That’s probably my favourite part of what I do — taking someone from “this hurts when I do it” to moving, loading and training confidently again.

And no two sessions look exactly the same.

Treat. Move. Strengthen. Perform.

That’s what Sports Therapy looks like at London Massage & Movement.

YIELDING vs OVERCOMING ISOMETRICS 💪

Isometric training isn’t just about holding a position.

There are two different ways we can use isometrics in rehab — and both have an important place.

1️⃣ YIELDING ISOMETRICS

You’re holding a position and resisting the load trying to move you.

Think:
• Spanish squat hold
• Calf raise hold
• Copenhagen hold
• Hamstring bridge hold

These are great for building load tolerance, positional strength and confidence, particularly when dynamic movement is still uncomfortable.

2️⃣ OVERCOMING ISOMETRICS

Now the intent changes.

Instead of holding a load, you’re trying to produce as much force as possible against something that cannot move.

Think:
• Max knee extension into an immovable resistance
• Hamstring pull against fixed straps
•Max Split Squat into BB
• Pushing or pulling maximally against a fixed bar

This allows us to target high force production at specific joint angles without needing movement.

And that can be incredibly useful in rehab.

So how might we progress rehab?

Restore ROM
⬇️
Yielding Isometrics
Tolerate & maintain force
⬇️
Overcoming Isometrics
Produce high force
⬇️
Isotonic Strength
Produce force through range
⬇️
Eccentric Loading
Absorb & control higher forces
⬇️
Supramaximal Eccentrics — where appropriate
Develop greater eccentric force capacity
⬇️
Plyometrics / Reactive Strength
Produce, absorb & redirect force quickly
⬇️
Return to Sport / Performance

These stages don’t always happen in isolation — good rehab will often overlap them as capacity improves.

It’s not simply about making an exercise harder.

It’s about changing what we’re asking the muscle, tendon and nervous system to do.

Can you move through the range you need?
➡️ Can you tolerate force?
➡️ Can you produce force?
➡️ Can you produce it through range?
➡️ Can you absorb higher forces?
➡️ Can you produce, absorb and redirect force quickly?

Rehab shouldn’t just get you out of pain.

The goal is to rebuild the capacity you need for whatever you want to get back to.

Going away this summer? Pack a band. 👇

With bank holidays and summer trips coming up, training doesn’t have to completely stop just because you’re away.

Here are 3 exercises using one resistance band that I regularly use to work on glute medius strength, hip control and single-leg stability:

1️⃣ B-Stance RDL + Cross-Body Row + Contralateral Hip IR
Challenges posterior chain strength while controlling rotation through the hip and pelvis.

2️⃣ Rear-Foot Elevated Clam / Split Squat Position
Loads the glute med while challenging frontal-plane hip and pelvic control.

3️⃣ Side Plank Hip Thrust
Glute med + lateral hip + trunk stability working together.

Why does this matter?

Your glute medius plays a big role in controlling the pelvis and femur when you’re on one leg — something we need every time we walk, run, climb stairs or change direction.

You don’t always need a fully equipped gym.

Sometimes one band and 15 minutes is plenty to keep working while you’re away.

Save these for your next trip. ✈️

JUST 10 mL OF FLUID ON THE KNEE? 💧

It doesn’t sound like much.

But one of the key points from the Bodymaster Method Knee course with the awesome John Gibbons was how even a small knee joint effusion can begin to affect VMO / quadriceps activation.

The VMO forms part of the quadriceps and contributes to:

• Knee extension and terminal extension control
• Dynamic knee stability
• Patellar control
• Controlling the knee as we accept load

So if swelling begins to inhibit quadriceps function:

KNEE EFFUSION

REDUCED VMO / QUADRICEPS ACTIVATION

REDUCED KNEE EXTENSION CONTROL

ALTERED STABILITY & LOAD ACCEPTANCE

CHANGES TO FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT

But the knee doesn’t work in isolation.

The foot, ankle, knee, hip, pelvis and trunk all contribute to how we move.

Hip strength and control influence the position of the femur and knee. The knee needs to effectively accept and control load. The ankle needs sufficient movement. The pelvis and trunk need to provide stability.

So when we’re assessing or rehabbing a knee, we need to look beyond simply:

“Does your knee hurt?”

Everything has to work together to produce, transfer and absorb force.

Being pain-free doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ready.

One of the biggest things I try to get across during rehab is that removing pain is only one part of the process.

If someone comes into the clinic with an injury, I don’t want the end goal to simply be:

“It doesn’t hurt anymore.”

I want to gradually rebuild what their body needs to tolerate AND MORE!!!

Restore movement → build control → develop strength → integrate it into movement → return to better performance.

And each stage should have a reason for progressing.

Can you access the range?
Can you control it?
Can you tolerate load?
Can you produce and absorb force?
Can you repeat it under fatigue?
Can you meet the demands of your sport or training?

Because time is a useful guide — but it shouldn’t be the only thing deciding your rehab progression.

Whether I’m working with someone trying to get back to everyday training or a professional athlete returning to competition, the principle is the same:

Don’t just get them pain-free. Prepare them for what comes next.

People often ask me what keeps me motivated after nearly 20 years in this industry.

The answer has changed over the years.

When I first started, I was driven by learning as much as I possibly could. Every course, every mentor and every opportunity to improve was something I wanted to be part of.

As the years have gone on, I’ve realised it isn’t just the knowledge that keeps me going.

It’s the people.

The conversations in the clinic.
The athletes chasing performance.
The clients who simply want to get out of pain.
The coaches I’ve met.
The friends I’ve made.
The opportunities to teach, mentor and continue learning myself.

I’ve also been incredibly fortunate to work alongside some of the very best in sport. From professional boxers and Formula racing drivers to elite performers across a range of sports, those experiences have pushed me to continually raise my own standards. Not because they’re elite, but because working in those environments reinforces just how important the fundamentals are. Assess well, coach well, communicate well and never stop learning.

I’ve also realised that no two days are ever the same.

One day I’m helping someone prepare for elite competition.
The next I’m getting a parent back to lifting their child without pain.
The day after, I’m teaching coaches or mentoring therapists.

That’s what I love most.

Every person has a different goal, but they all trust me to help them move better, perform better and enjoy life more.

Looking back through these photos reminds me how fortunate I’ve been—not because of the places I’ve travelled or the athletes I’ve worked with, but because of the people I’ve met along the way and the relationships this profession has given me.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s this:

Find something that challenges you, excites you and makes you want to keep learning.

Pain going away doesn’t mean the injury has gone.

One of the biggest reasons injuries return is because people stop rehabilitation as soon as they feel better.

Pain is only one measure of recovery.

I want my clients to be able to:

✔️ Produce force
✔️ Absorb force
✔️ Rotate well
✔️ Move confidently
✔️ Return to the demands of their sport or daily life

That’s why every rehabilitation journey at LMM progresses from:

➡️ Treatment
➡️ Movement correction
➡️ Strength
➡️ Performance

Our goal isn’t just to get you out of pain.

It’s to stop you needing us for the same injury again.

Assess. Treat. Strengthen. Perform.

Hip flexors always feel tight? Here’s why stretching isn’t enough…

One of the most common complaints I hear is:

“My hip flexors are always tight.”

In reality, they often aren’t just tight—they’re weak, overloaded or lacking control.

If you only stretch them, you might get temporary relief, but unless you improve their strength and capacity, the tightness usually comes back.

These are three of my go-to progressions:

1️⃣ Mountain Climber Hip Flexion Isometric
Builds tolerance and teaches the hip flexors to stabilise the pelvis.

2️⃣ Hip Flexor Plank with Shoulder Taps
Challenges hip flexor endurance while integrating core stability and anti-rotation control.

3️⃣ Eccentric Single-Leg Hip Flexor Sit-Up
Develops strength through the lengthening phase, helping the hip flexors absorb force and cope with higher-demand activities like running, kicking and sprinting.

These exercises aren’t suitable for everyone and should always be prescribed based on your assessment and stage of rehabilitation.

Combined with the right mobility work, they’re a far more effective long-term solution than stretching alone.

Don’t just create movement… own it.

Assess. Treat. Strengthen. Perform.
