How do I adjust my fitness plan to reflect my goals?

There is a difference between training for fun and training with a specific goal in mind. I remember my introduction to training and using the gym consistently. It started in my second year of uni, where I would wake up at 6am every morning to train myself or to join a gym class. I’ve always been a lover of classes, especially spin and sometimes I’d go to the gym twice a day because I couldn't get enough. I would pick any class that was available at the time I planned to go to the gym and had no real progression with my weights or training style. I only began to develop and sustain any muscle definition since learning about the power of progressive overload and applying the relevant training systems. Since training and working as a PT, I see many people who have the same story as I did; joining classes and going to the gym everyday but failing to see real results can be confusing but I'm here to show you how to make it right!

I’ve been training Sarah for about 18 months now and I originally met her as an attendee of my Step classes! When she decided to give personal training a go, she was looking to improve her strength and fitness beyond the gym classes she attended. Swipe right to read her experience.

Monday Motivation - How do you refocus? 🤓

I’m in a mindset of refocusing this week and reviewing my experience with the first month of the year so far. I’d describe myself as an extroverted introvert and I had an abundance of energy last week that would usually have been put towards walking to and from the gym multiple times a day and training my clients in person. Usually, the day to day energy expenditure is enough to exhaust me and mellow me out in the evenings, but now I find myself with a feeling of restlessness and the feeling of wanting to ‘do’ almost around the clock. Refocusing my mind and energy allows me to be creative and productive during my working hours but also, gives value to my down time and time away from the screens.

This week, some refocusing elements i’m implementing in to my routine are:

🤳🏾-Not using social media before breakfast. Sometimes I could really benefit from an extra 30 minutes uninterrupted sleep before I start my day. Most days i’m up at 5.15am and missing out on beauty sleep isn’t worth the scroll!

🧘🏾‍♀️-Trying to be present with myself on my walks. I try and go for a walk everyday and it’s very easy to put music/podcasts in my ears and before I know it, I'm back home. I’m going to take time this week to really be mindful and present with every minute as I come into contact with nature.

👩🏾‍🏫-Spend a bit of time everyday reading a chapter from a book. I loved reading as a young adult and I'd go through books with no problem. I’d spend whole weekends immersed in fiction and adventure and I absolutely loved it. Now I'm a little older, I still love fiction but I've also bought books on various different topics over the years that I've hardly touched. This week I’m retraining my focus. To be completely present with a book and get lost in the words on the page.

Take a moment to refocus this week. What can you direct your energies towards for a long lasting and positive impact on your day to day routine? Comment below!

🤯 I want to progress my exercise regime but I don’t know how to do it...

Training with no plan or understanding of what you’re doing can often leave you lost or demotivated when your results eventually plateau. How many people often omit doing certain exercises because they’re not confident with the form or lack the knowledge to know how beneficial implementing th could be? Having someone who plans your sessions as well as teaches you correct form and tools for successful progressive overload can help you see results quickly, while making the path to your goals clearer too.

I’ve trained my lovely client and exceptional yoga teacher, Jo for a couple years now, and it’s been a real pleasure to do so. Using exercises that constantly challenge her, as well as being someone she can have a laugh with are all important factors to keeping her training fresh! Swipe right to see what she says, in her own words.

💝

You don’t have to search very hard to find a wealth of news about the current pandemic and the timeline of how long we’ve been dealing with Ms Rona. With Blue Monday just gone and people feeling the strain of January, I think it’s important that we all have something to look forward to, no matter how small. Whenever the weight of the world feels like a 40kg dumbbell left in the wrong section of the gym (I don’t miss those days!), I remind myself of why we’re all making sacrifices and list the things I’m looking forward to doing when we finally get the chance:

- Seeing my boyfriend! Long distance is hard enough but spending Christmas and our Anniversary apart was really tough. Shout out to all those people in long distance relationships putting in the work to make it work.❤️

-Celebrating my birthday. I’m an April baby and crossing all my fingers and toes that I’ll be able to celebrate with my friends and family in a couple of months.🎂

-Brunch. Need I say more?💅🏾

-Training my clients in person. I have the best clients in the world and we’re training remotely currently, but I can’t wait to get them back into the weights section again!💪🏾

What things are you looking forward to in the future? What keeps you going as you navigate modern life?

Monday Motivation 👀

Yesterday I posted on my stories about struggling to write long term goals and the feeling of disappointment when some of them don't materialise. I think it's important to talk about the realities of goal setting as the common narrative is: if you set a goal and work towards it everything will come to fruition. Sometimes, circumstances outside of your control can change the course of your life and it can leave you feeling quite helpless. Looking through the responses to my stories and based on my own experiences and reflections, I have some 'long term goal musings' to share.

- Having a rough idea of an end goal, rather than a massively specific one allows the path you take to get there, greater flexibility.

- Sometimes fixating on one version of a future actually limits your view and stops you taking advantage of other opportunities.

- You're allowed to review and edit your long term goals along the way. 5 year plans can be be broken down into 5, 1 year plans or 10, 6 month plans too.

- Time is a social construct we use to provide us with structure and control. If 3 years isn't enough time to reach a goal, it doesn't mean the dream stops there. If you want something enough and you have the capacity to get there, time shouldn't restrict you.

Let's continue the conversation below! Do you have long term goals? How do you approach writing them and working towards them?

How do I keep motivated when training at home?

There are loads of ways to keep your motivation up when training at home and using a Personal Trainer can be very helpful in this. Not only do you have your sessions created specifically for your ability, your space and your equipment, you have accountability for your goals too. We coach you through each exercise, help you get through the days when you may not have trained at all and encourage you to remember why you started. I often have clients tell me that if they had not seen me that day, they probably would not have moved, but after the session they feel alot better for having done it!

I’ve been training my awesome client Isobel for just under a year now, and we’ve seen each other pretty much every week for at least one session. Swipe right ➡️ to see what Remote Training has done for her own fitness and motivation!

Monday Motivation 🥳

This is one of 3 looks I have at the moment. This is 'Going for a Walk' Colette. The other two looks I have are 'Training my Clients' and 'Home Workout'. I would be lying if I said I could wait for 'Brunch', 'Date Night' and 'Tough Mudder' Colette, but it's something to look forward to.
I've been looking at each of these aspects of my modern life as positively as I can, and I'm really getting to know each one.

Going for a Walk Colette can easily get 8,000 steps in an hour and knows her local forest like the back of her hand.

Training my Clients Colette knows how to design an effective workout for someone with limited space and equipment, and can still ensure results and SWEAT!

Home Workout Colette has the motivation to train everyday and isn't limited by time of day or style of training.

These three sides of myself are new and have developed over the series of lockdowns we've faced. I've learnt so much about myself, my resilience and my capacity to adapt to the world around me. I'm proud of everything I've achieved, even when it felt like I was living in groundhog day 😭 Take some time today to think about the parts of yourself you've discovered, nurtured and let go of. I can guarantee you've levelled up!

🥬

I think I'm addicted to Kale. Send help 🤣

I've really taken to focusing my energy on the things within my control, rather than outside of it. The moment my mindset changed, the motivation for lockdown life changed drastically too.

Just before lockdown 3.0 kicked in, I'd settled myself into a new gym routine that was bearing fruit. Now, I ensure I'm hitting my workouts at home, because it's within my control to do so. I had also gotten into a really good routine of meal prepping my breakfast & lunches too, so that when I was at work and driving to and from clients, I always had the right things to hand. Now, I ensure that I meal prep big batches of tasty veg, to go alongside my lunches and dinners at home, so it's never a last minute scramble for what to eat.

Are you seeing a pattern here?...

What's in your control, is in your control.

Now, what works for me may not work for someone else, but the sentiment is the same. If you want something, work back from that end goal and break up the steps into manageable tasks. Lots of us set intentions over the last year and the path to getting there may not have looked as we planned, but I find comfort in this statement:

The things that you can do now - do, and the things that you can't - don't sweat it.

Monday Motivation 🧘🏾‍♀️

It’s January the 4th and the first Monday Motivation of the year! I've been so inspired to transform my living space into one that I LOVE being in and allows me to think clearly day to day. As I mainly work remotely now, I want to ensure that my work space particularly has lots of light and that space is efficiently used. I’m spending a few days decluttering and being decisive about the things I want to keep as I tend to find a clear, clean and bright space often directly translates to how I'm feeling in my mind. As i’m sorting through items, I ask myself 3 questions :

- When was the last time I used this?
- Could someone else benefit from this more than me?
- Am I holding onto this item for the use or the nostalgia?

As a general rule, I tend to find that applying this logic as I move around the space has ensured that I’ve kept things that have a positive presence, and I find it easier to detach myself from things I don’t need. I feel lighter already!

What’s your current work space like? How do you feel when walking into ‘work mode’ ? Comment below!

Happy New Year! 🎉✨🎊

If you’re reading this it means you made it through one of the most challenging years and you’ve come out on the other side - you sound like a fighter to me!

This is a January unlike any I can remember; with fad diets, restrictive thinking and the ‘new year new me’ crowd fully bamboozled of their place in society, it feels like maybe for the first time January is quiet enough to hear yourself think. I decided a few years back that I wouldn’t be setting New Year Resolutions any more, but setting Intentions. Resolutions can feel quite restrictive and are quite often made in response to behaviors that we say we want to change, but quite often don’t. For me, intentions are about framing your behaviors with an end goal insight and working back from that end goal through your day to day actions.

An example of the difference between the two might be:

-Resolution: to go to the gym 5 times a week
-Intention: to move more, so my overall fitness improves

This intention opens you up to all the possibilities that moving can mean, whether it’s walking more, hitting a goal amount of steps, trying online classes or joining a run club. When your resolution says ‘gym 5 times a week’ and you only go twice, you can believe you have already failed and it’s easy to give up completely.

So, I ask, what are your intentions? They could be absolutely anything! To drink more water? To keep in better contact with friends and family? To move everyday, even just for 30 minutes? Whatever your intentions are, you can rest assured you don’t need a ‘new you’ to do it. The old you got through the last 365 days and has brought you here for a reason to January 1st. If you want to discuss your intention setting and are interested in working towards them together, then get in touch - the old you sounds like my kind of person!
