🤔 💦Why do we go underwater at Water Babies and how do we swim your baby underwater safely? 💦 ⁠

Going underwater is a natural part of swimming and the best time to introduce your little one to this is during the first 6 months of their life. This is because their gag reflex will instinctively kick in when they feel water on their face, nose or throat. This reflex causes the soft tissue at the back of their throat to close, meaning they can't inhale or swallow any water.⁠
⁠
Through our word association 'Name, are you ready? Go!' we build up your baby's ability to control their breathing so that they are able to hold their breath during their underwater swims! We love seeing our water babies swim underwater and come up to the surface with a big smile on their face and will never submerge a baby that isn't happy.⁠

Get your little one used to the water in the safe environment of our Water Babies NW London lessons, so they are prepared should they ever find themselves in an emergency situation around water! ⚠️🚨

🤔 Has your little one come back to swimming after the summer break and suddenly seems a bit unsure in the water?

First things first, take a deep breath. This is incredibly common.

Many babies and toddlers go through what's known as the "water wobbles". It's a completely normal part of their development as they become more aware of the world around them and start seeking reassurance from the people they trust most. ❤️

❤️ "What I never could have imagined was how much freedom being in the water would give Phoenix."

When Phoenix joined just before his second birthday, his mum Lauren simply wanted him to feel confident in the water. Born with spina bifida, Phoenix has reduced movement and sensation in his legs and primarily uses a wheelchair and posterior walker. But what started as a way to build water confidence became so much more.

Over the years, Phoenix has gone from strength to strength, developing the confidence and independence to float and swim on his own. For his family, swimming gave him something they never expected: freedom.

Phoenix's story is a powerful reminder of the difference swimming can make for children with disabilities and additional needs. Water is a leveller, creating opportunities for children to move, explore and achieve things that may feel more challenging on land. From building confidence and body awareness to developing vital water safety skills, the benefits can extend far beyond the pool.
