The (Unreliable) Bears hit the sand in Valencia earlier this month! 🔥☀️🏐

The cold, rainy weather in London is making us wish we were still in warm, sunny Valencia playing. 6 medals came home with the Bears (Kim getting half of them and James none ), Ezra earned himself the nickname of Pokey Bear and complained multiple times how “a beach set is not a real set, just set like you would indoors”, Andrea showed how powerful her Spanish mom voice can be and Veva drank more Aquarius in a week than one would think possible.

Hopefully Portugal 2027 will bring more Bears shenanigans 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼

📸 Thank you to our private photographer Lorcan "loki" Rodgers for the pics 👏🏻🤭

A valiant effort by the juvenile grizzlies today. Many last minute drop outs and one tragic miscommunication (we love you Jeremy, so sorry!) meant an even more chaotic court entrance than usual.

A rough start to the first set meant we couldn’t quite catch them, going from 6 points down to 21-17.

Second set I blacked out for most of it as did everyone else it seems. 21-10 (ish)

Final set, we just cut loose and there were embers of a legendary comeback. Sadly it wasn’t quite enough. 21-19.

Particular highlight to Alex for the first yellow card of the season by asking the referee if he needed his eyesight checked. Very aggressively. In French.

MVP to Jan!
MVB to Ian!

A late Friday night tilt had the Polar Pops wondering why anyone would want to have a match late on a Friday. We would also like to state that the gym was cold as this was a common excuse from the players despite being dubbed as “Polar” Bears who should be accustomed to frigid environments.

The game started off with both sides coming out guns-a-blazing with big swings, wrist watch-exploding blocks, and serves that threatened to test the back wall. There were many many fans in attendance but honestly they didn’t really make as much noise as one would expect.

Cherie, our captain, dazzled with her front court performance but decided to see how far she could serve the ball out. Meanwhile, Sara, her fellow substitute partner made all her serves in, including an ace (probably because Veva’s head was not in attendance to aim at)! Also disappointed by lack of the red-haired ref lady and social media guru were the Blockbusters boys in attendance. They certainly weren’t cheering (or jeering) loud enough and were too busy checking the players out but then not actually asking them out after the match. And once again, the spectators thought that the Bears coach was far too serious all match despite wearing fluffy ears all game.

Nevertheless, the night resulted in the team making an unfortunate early appearance in the Thirsty Bear pub. Yes, that is a real place and no they do not sponsor us—yet. We might have lost the match but the vibes were still high as we spent hours together in the pub. We all shared drinks and shared some GDPR data about our birthdays and learned a fun little factoid that Ches shares the same birthday as Julius Caesar (not that anyone cares).

Big ups to Jasna for winning her first MVB and the respect from the opponents side too after multiple blocks, big digs down the line, and a majestic jump serve directly into the back of Andrea’s head.

The girls are ready to put in work in training and get back in the win column! Go Bears go! 🐻🐻‍❄️

The Kodiaks took on Future Stars on Thursday night in a game that the Kodiaks coach (yours truly) labelled as “thankfully over”.

A memo to both teams from a Russian AI bot suggesting new court dimensions of 20m x 20m were in immediate effect, as it saw the kind of serving clinic that means everyone knows what is being trained on Sunday. (Further proof on slide 3, requested by yours truly)

Highlights of the evening were a mesmeric lifting performance by Ramith, desperately searching for what constitutes the grey area of the new tipping rules. MVB and MVP performances by number 23 (Brendan) and Warrick for scoring points in the standard fashion. A sure sign of a new team gelling with multiple on court bumper cars moments. Vale making his debut as setter and realising he needs to up his cardio and finally Tomo realising how control freak the LVA have gotten by wanting players to register before they play.

Personally I was left perplexed by the whole experience, wondering just how extreme my behaviour will need to be to get a yellow card this season. And I’m still contemplating when Alfie’s set one jump serve will reach the international space station.

The Kodiaks ran out 3-1 winners on the day and once the nerves were gone played as if they had met only a few weeks ago.

All in all vintage stuff from an almost entirely new team of Bears. A big thank you to all the supporters that made it to the bear pit to witness the sickness. Soon we will do it all again against somebody else!

The freshly awoken Grizzly Bears (Volleyball Bears hibernate backwards ok, go with it) faced off with AST Barnet 2 at home in Tulse Hill.

After a dominant first set from the Bears, AST Barnet remembered that 2 of them were capable of hitting over our block... It was a hard fought match with a lot of back and forth, but the Grizzlies simply made too many mistakes.

Particular highlights involved Terry running up to Berny as he was passing and taking the ball in the face... Maybe he really needed to know the time, or needed a hug mid set, who knows? Ian trying to put a ball into orbit and Kaz attempting to kill off his fellow players in the warm up.

A disappointing result, but a good first game with a lot of lessons learned (21-9, 16-21, 21-17, 17-21, 11-15). On to the next!
