In 2019, the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA) introduced a nearshore trawling ban to help restore the seabed and local marine ecosystem. The near-shore trawling ban prevents fishing boats dragging their heavy trawling machinery across the sea floor, ploughing up the seabed and destroying the marine ecosystem. Without the trawlers, it is hoped that the seabed along the Sussex coast will recover.
The early stages of a recovery will include plants beginning to take root and bivalves and other filter feeders establishing themselves. It is hoped the area will act as juvenile fish nursery, helping restock the local fisheries. The whole ecosystem should help reduce coastal erosion by binding the seabed together. And as the life blossoms, it will absorb and store carbon dioxide, helping reduce the impact of climate change.
Today we dived a site inside the new protection area and saw many of these beautiful juvenile cat sharks.❤️

Fantastic HSAC trip to dive WW1 & WW2 shipwrecks near Dieppe, France.
The French shipwrecks we were diving were strictly enforced’no take zones’ - unlike those in the UK - meaning it's illegal to remove objects from the sites. The result is that so much more of the ships and their contents remain for divers to see.
The Yatagan was a WW1 French Destroyer which sank near Dieppe in 1916 after colliding with SS Teviot – a British steamship transporting horses to the Western Front.
It was amazing to find huge piles of shells (many still in their cases) scattered all around the guns. You never get to see this sort of thing on UK dives.

HSAC’s first dive of 2024 - fun but chilly Stoney Cove. Numb fingers, poor viz, wayward navigation and lots of laughs.

Hackney Sub Aqua Club is 60 Years Old!!
The Hackney Dive Club was formed in 1963 as a 'BSAC Special Club' for young people in East London. It became a full BSAC club in 1983.
We had a brilliant party to celebrate and thank all our volunteers - both old and new - for teaching 100s and 100s of people to dive.

Brilliant film by Tom Reader about underwater exploration and archeology around Taggs Island on the River Thames - with Hackney Sub Aqua Club and underwater archeologist Gary Bankhead.
