Before I started working with .lawson he had lost the motivation to train, gained weight and as a result was in the worst physical shape of his life.

Beau wanted to have more structure to his day and build healthier habits with a routine that could fit his lifestyle. He needed help with a plan and the right guidance, instead of doing random workouts and hoping for the best.

Just a few of Beau’s achievements include:

FREE WEIGHTS OR MACHINES?

Which one is better? It depends on your specific goals. But you’d most likely be better off using BOTH!

The main argument is that free weights are more “functional”. But this isn’t true unless being functional means only picking up dumbbells and barbells 🤔

Most of us train to get stronger, look better and feel better. And for these goals, machines are a great option.

There are many cases where using a machine is actually a better option. For example, if you really want to focus on your quads and you want to see how hard you can push it, would it be better taking a barbell squat to failure (where your back and core have to work tremendously hard too) or would it make more sense to get into a seated leg extension where the focus is only the quads and the risk of injury going to failure is way lower? The answer is the leg extension.

And for all the people who are like “BuT wHat iF yOu haD tO pICk onE?!” 🤪

Well then I’d probably choose free weights because they take up less space and you can train pretty much every part of your body with a bench, rack, dumbbell, barbell and some plates.

But which sick f**k is making you choose one?! 😂 Join a gym that has both and use both! 💪🏼

TRAIN LIKE YOU MEAN IT

If you’re training like a wet lettuce, no wonder you’re not seeing any results.

Training intensity is often overlooked in favour of the perfect training split, the optimal amount of rest, the best exercises for certain body parts, the list goes on.

Now don’t get me wrong that stuff is all VERY important too.

When working with my clients I use the RPE scale (Rating of Perceived Exertion) to gauge effort on exercises in a program.

It rates difficulty on a scale of 1-10.

For example, a rating of RPE 5 means it was only moderately difficult and you could have probably done 5 more reps. A rating of RPE 9 means it was very challenging and you could have only completed 1 more rep with good technique.

As a general rule of thumb, we want the majority of our training to be within the RPE 7-10 range for best results. As always, there are exceptions to this (when learning an exercise for the first time, etc.) but this is a great place to start!

Before I started working with she was going through cycles of exercising a lot, then not at all. She had difficulty actually sticking to something longer than a couple of weeks and therefore wouldn’t see the results that she wanted to. This led to massive frustration.

If you’ve been following me for a while you probably already know that I only post when I go on holiday 😅

You might not know that I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 10 years 👴🏼😂 I’ve completed a BSc in Exercise Science along with all my other education and qualifications along the way 📚

And I’ve also coached thousands of hours in the gym with elite athletes, models, actors and busy professionals💪🏼

Something that I’ve noticed through my clients and my own journey over the last 14 years, whether it’s getting stronger, losing fat, building muscle or improving fitness, is that noticeable change takes time.

You might not notice any changes for weeks, even when you’re busting your ass everyday.

And then all of a sudden a switch flips and your hard work starts to show! You start to see some progress but then it might slow down again or even come to a stop.

This is your sign to trust the process and keep going.
