A deserved victory for the Athletic after an excellent all-round display in a tough and physical contest.

The girls started brightly, moving the ball confidently and competing superbly for first and second balls. Our positive approach and high press paid off as we took control of the game, combining some excellent attacking football with clinical finishing.

The visitors responded strongly after the break and tested our resilience, but when the game became difficult, the girls showed real character. We regrouped, regained our composure and added two further well-taken goals to put the result beyond doubt.

A performance full of quality, determination and togetherness, with every player contributing to the victory.

Plenty of positives to take forward as we turn our attention to the next challenge

Hornchurch Athletic U13s suffered a 6–2 defeat at home to Ruislip Rangers in a challenging fixture where a nervous opening ultimately left the girls with too much to do.

The Athletic struggled to settle during the opening 20 minutes and into the early stages of the second quarter, allowing Ruislip to take control of the game. However, the response from the girls was excellent. Two quick goals from Isla brought Hornchurch right back into the contest and completely changed the momentum of the match.

From that point, the Athletic grew in confidence and competed much more effectively, showing the determination and character that we know this group possesses.

Conditions played a significant part in the game, with a difficult pitch making it challenging for either side to play their usual football. The unpredictable bounce meant both teams looked to play more directly at times, with long throws and goalkeeper distribution becoming an important part of the contest.

Unfortunately, some key moments went against the Athletic. Two of the visitors’ goals came via significant deflections, while another two followed initial saves where Ruislip reacted quickest to the rebounds.

Despite the scoreline, the girls continued to battle until the final whistle. With only one substitute available and players being asked to rotate through different positions, the effort and commitment across the squad could not be questioned.

There are lessons to take from the difficult opening, but also plenty of encouragement from the three periods where the Athletic competed strongly and showed what they are capable of.

Attention now turns to next week’s fixture against Arsenal. There is work to do, but the girls can take confidence from the character and competitiveness they showed for large parts of this game.

The Athletic endured a difficult start to the game, finding themselves 2–0 behind after the opening quarter following a slow and somewhat disjointed opening.

The young Hornchurch Athletic side struggled to find their usual rhythm early on, with possession a little sloppy and the team lacking some of the intensity and grit needed to take control of the contest. However, there was a noticeable improvement as the game progressed, with the girls growing into the match quarter by quarter.

The Athletic goalkeeper produced some important moments to keep the team in the contest, while those in front of her gradually became more organised and competitive. Despite the improvement, the opposition found a third goal during the third quarter to extend their advantage.

The response from the girls was encouraging. Rather than allowing their heads to drop, they continued to work, became more confident in possession and showed much more of the intensity expected from the group as the game went on, pulling a goal back in the 3rd, and another back in the 4th.

While the result was disappointing, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. A lack of pre-season match minutes was evident at times, with some of the sharpness, decision-making and intensity that naturally comes from competitive fixtures still developing.

Importantly, the areas that need improvement are clear and can be worked on. The progression shown from quarter to quarter was encouraging and gives the group a good platform to build from.

Not the start we wanted, but plenty to take forward as the girls continue to find their rhythm and build towards the challenges ahead.
