Next week. Thank you These still-life photographs are a tintypes, made on 8x10” (inch) aluminium plate. Tintypes are one-of-a- kind, orthochromatic photographs, handmade using the wet plate collodion process.
Invented in the 1860s, a lacquered sheet of metal is coated with an emulsion, then soaked in silver nitrate, to become a light sensitive piece of material - enabling a direct positive to be made when exposed. After exposure, the plate is developed and fixed by eye in a dark environment. The entire process is implemented by hand from start to finish, within a window of 15 minutes, to ensure the surface of the tintype remains wet throughout (giving the process its name).
The resulting images are wholly unique, I favour this analog medium for its beautiful aesthetic and unrivalled quality. Every subject is deserving of a meaningful capture. Wet plate collodion defines photography with intent and epitomises the art of photography.
