He Maimai Aroha - Karaitiana (Mack) Tamatea
Waka Ama Aotearoa NZ is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of our kaumatua, dear friend and fellow kaitūao whānau member Karaitiana Tamatea. Karaitiana and his wife Te Rairi have been involved with the Waka Ama Nationals since the early 2000’s. Since this time, Karaitiana, Te Rairi and our Ngāti Korokī Kahukura whānau have hosted many visitors, whānau and friends of Waka Ama. Spending the entire week at Karāpiro, supporting us as organisers and ensuring all manuwhiri were cared for with the utmost level of manaakitanga and aroha.
Tomorrow morning, Monday 12 January, Karaitiana will arrive to Lake Karāpiro where paddlers can pay their respect to him and his whānau while in transit to Maungatautari Marae. All races will pause at this time until Karaitiana departs the lake. We ask that everyone onsite respect this time for our kaumatua.
We are reminded by his famous saying ‘he pakanga ki tai, he rongopai ki uta’, although waka ama is competitive on the water, we are all whānau when we return to land and to look after one another, while enjoying the sport we all love.
Haere atu rā e Koro, moe mai i roto i te aroha o ngā mātua, o ngā tūpuna.
