A senior judge who worked for the United Nations as well as Uganda's High Court has been sentenced to six years and four months in prison after she was convicted of enslaving a young woman to work as a maid in the United Kingdom.

The Oxford Crown Court found that Lydia Mugambe had taken "advantage of her status" over the young Ugandan woman in the "most egregious way."

Judge convicted under Modern Slavery Act
Prosecutors said that Mugambe tricked a young Ugandan woman to move to the UK in 2022 to work as a maid and provide childcare without pay. Mugambe was studying her PhD at the University of Oxford at the time.

Mugambe was also charged with conspiring with John Leonard Mugerwa, then Uganda's deputy high commissioner in London, to get the victim into Britain by lying on her visa application.

The judge was found guilty in March on four counts: conspiring to facilitate the commission of a breach of UK immigration law, facilitating travel with a view to exploitation, forcing someone to work, and conspiracy to intimidate a witness after a trial.

Two of the charges came under Britain's Modern Slavery Act.

A Nigerian National, Christian Baledi Kadima alias Erick Kambaye Katalayi, has been sentenced to forty years imprisonment for the brutal murder of his fiancรฉe, Advocate Elizabeth Koki Musyoki.

Hon. Justice Francis Rayola Olel of the Machakos High Court found Kadima guilty of murder contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code (Cap 63) of the Laws of Kenya and sentenced him accordingly.

The court heard that on the evening of January 7, 2021, at Ferndale Court in Syokimau, Athi River Sub-County, Machakos County, Kadima visited Elizabeth, who had reportedly been feeling unwell. What began as a seemingly routine visit quickly turned fatal.

According to testimony from the house help, loud noises erupted from the coupleโ€™s bedroom, followed by Kadima leaving in a hurry, breathing heavily and looking troubled. The next morning, Elizabethโ€™s lifeless body was discovered, her face covered with blood-stained pillows.

A post-mortem conducted by Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Odour concluded that Elizabeth died from asphyxia due to suffocation. The autopsy further revealed bruises on her neck and internal injuries, consistent with a vicious struggle.

Kadima had initially pleaded not guilty when arraigned in court on February 9, 2021.

The prosecution team, led by Mr. Dennis Mangโ€™are and Ms. Mary Otulo, built a compelling case, presenting fourteen witnesses who helped establish Kadimaโ€™s culpability beyond reasonable doubt.
