Arsenal drought shines light on Mikel Arteta’s misuse of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

In the 44th minute, Leicester City launched a rare counter-attack. Arsenal were out of position and, for once, Leicester had bodies to spare.

But as James Maddison carried the ball forward with Harvey Barnes and Dennis Praet for company, like three close-up magicians sizing up a bank vault, the move petered out. Or rather, it took a detour.

The ball made its way from one flank to the other. Arsenal were able to reset, and Leicester did not mind that one bit, playing about in front of the box with no intention of over-committing in order to breach their defence.

That and other similar moments were deeply frustrating. Like sneezes that never quite come to pass. Teasing something more but never delivering. Until, of course, the ultimate release arrived with 10 minutes to go when Jamie Vardy headed in his 11th goal in 12 games against Arsenal to seal a 1-0 win.

It was not quite smash-and-grab, more a bit of old school rope-a-dope. Brendan Rodgers organised Leicester into a low block, ensuring their lines were “tight”. Well enough that even though the 4-3-3 they were up against on paper morphed into something quite different, with Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin up alongside their opposition full-backs, they could cope.

Arteta had a slightly different take: “It’s very difficult to create chances against 10 men behind the ball.” Factually accurate, of course, but a statement that requires very few ingredients to curdle and turn sour.

Nevertheless, one man’s tactical masterstroke is another man’s parked bus. Perhaps, though, the key revelation from Sunday night is that by not being attacked, Arsenal’s attacking was considerably limited.

Coming into the weekend against a side with the third-lowest number of shots on goal this season, Leicester saw no reason to offer up unnecessary opportunities in transition. And with Vardy good for 30 minutes and little more, parking their counter-attacking ways, if done correctly, was only an hour-long job.

That it worked so well owed to a bit of luck - a disallowed goal and a glaring miss from Alexandre Lacazette – and to a dearth of creativity that left Arsenal heavily reliant on gifts of time and space that were not forthcoming.

That was not necessarily a problem earlier this year, as they scored 30 in their final 17 matches of the 2019/20 season, the fifth-most from the start of 2020 to the 27 July finish. But with just eight goals in the first six games of 2020/21, it is now a serious cause for concern. We can claim the rainbow with this rain in the seven goals conceded – a record only bettered by Aston Villa’s five (albeit from one game fewer) – but what does that matter when three of the six matches have ended in defeat?

On Sunday night, there was one figure who summed up this attacking malaise. A once bright spark and social media phenom, now a dour sight on the periphery of it all, well-moneyed and desperate to stay relevant.

When Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang penned a new three-year deal after the most protracted of negotiations followed by carnival celebrations when he signed, no one – certainly not him – would have imagined a month later he would be where he is now. Not simply in the midst of a run of four league matches without a goal for the first time since 2014, a single goal to his name so far, but spending most of his time on the right when the left has consistently been an ally.

As part of a front three against Leicester with Lacazette and Buyako Saka, Aubameyang was the most withdrawn. He spent his time around the halfway line in the first-half, winning tackles (two) and regaining possession (six times). Across 90 minutes plus five of stoppage time, he touched the ball just once in the opposition box - a stretching apologetic header. When he eventually got a chance on the left once Saka was taken off for Nicolas Pepe on 65 minutes, he created a chance for Bellerin – the only shot Arsenal had in the second half.

Aubameyang himself was able to get off two shots, taking his season tally to just eight. That is a dip in keeping with the trend of his teammates. In 2018/19, Arsenal averaged 12.3 shots a match. That dropped to 10.7 in 2019/20. Now, at this early stage of the new campaign, it is 8.8.

Across that same period, the Gabon forward has scored 45 of the side’s 133 league goals (over a third). And, granted, we’re hardly blowing minds here by pointing out Aubameyang shooting less will lead to Arsenal scoring less. But, for that same reason, here seems a pretty straightforward fix.

The creativity behind the front three will come, especially as Thomas Partey grows into his role and those around him become familiar with his ways. If Saka on the left is to be persisted with, Aubameyang could go through the middle, in place of Lacazette whose limitations in wide positions is a problem. That would require giving Nicolas Pepe a go on the right, a player many Arsenal fans are done with already, while Willian returns to fitness or Reiss Nelson steps up in a big way.

It should be said, these combinations have been tried before. Each having their moments but never enough of them to avoid these conversations. But whatever reaction Arteta has from this defeat - a third in four - should include the consideration that Arsenal are losing more than they are gaining by using Aubameyang as they are. The focus towards greater stability is noble, but at what cost? Asking your one trusted match-winner to play within himself is proving counter-productive right now.

Both sides at the Emirates had a prolific goalscorer at their disposal. The one that made the key difference played only half-an-hour. Arteta might not like how Rodgers set-up, but, ultimately, he triumphed by making better use of his best player.

GUENDOUZI HEADED FOR THE EXIT?

Guendouzi has always been Mr Marmite - you either love him, or you hate him.

While the comparison to a divisive (and tasty) spread only ever used to be the case for rival fans, it seems as though Guendouzi is starting to divide opinion among Arsenal supporters too.

The 'handbags' at full-time against Brighton appears to have been the final straw for a number of you lot and also for Arteta.

Ever since his bust up(?) with Maupay, rumours have been rife that the club held an emergency meeting with Guendouzi in which both parties agreed that it might be best if there's a separation this summer.

There's rumours of interest from just about every top club in Europe, not least Man United and even Barcelona. Arsenal have apparently set their asking price at £40million, is that too low? I'm not quite sure.

If I'm being honest, and sorry for sitting on the fence here, I haven't got a clue what I would do if a bid like that came in for Guendouzi.

While I would be so, so tempted to accept it, he might well end up being worth even more than that in just a couple of years, as is his undoubted potential.

What do you think we should do with Guendouzi?

QUESTIONABLE NEW CONTRACTS

While we all wait with bated breath for news on deals for Aubameyang and Saka, the club clearly have more pressing issues to sort out. Issues like just how much Luiz's agent should receive as a fee in his client's new deal.

That's right, folks, Luiz is sticking around for one more year after the club agreed to keep him on the books not only until the end of this season, but for the new season too. I think we're all in agreement about what a terrible decision that is, right?

Elsewhere, there was confirmation of the permanent signing of Mari, who I don't think that we can really have an opinion on either way yet. He's been so unlucky with injuries since joining us, but has looked OK whenever he's played and so I'm not too fussed about that one.

By far the most surprising new deal of the bunch was for Cedric, who, despite not playing a single minute since joining us on loan in January, has earned himself a bumper four-year-deal. Answers on a postcard, please!

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if whatever is going on behind the scenes with Raul, Edu and Kia Joorabchian appears on Crimewatch in a couple of years time. Crimes against football have clearly been committed if Cedric is getting four years for doing literally nothing.

I hope you've got your yellow ribbons ready, Gooners?

Two wins and two defeats from four games since the restart... not bad, but not great either, right?

I was so down after the Brighton defeat that I just wanted the season to end and to never see Maupay's face ever again.

Back-to-back wins have since perked me up (somewhat) and with an FA Cup semi final against *checks notes* Man City on the horizon, there's reasons to be hopeful yet!

MIXED BAG OF RESULTS

It seems like an age since that Luiz 'disasterclass' against Man City, doesn't it?

Our thumping at the Etihad was a very sobering experience and a stark reminder of the size of the job Arteta has on his hands.

Still, at least we had an easy one against Brighton up next, right? Wrong...
The less said about that day, the better. In fact, the only saving grace that we can take from the defeat is that Leno's injury isn't as bad as we all first feared.

With our confidence on the floor, Southampton were actually the bookies favourites to beat us last Thursday. But, me being the blind optimist that I am, I still had hope that we would win... that's right, I believed that Arsenal could beat the mighty Southampton.

Full credit to Eddie and to Willock for putting in a real shift against the Saints and getting us that much-needed win. Oh, and also a big thank you to their keeper for his moment of madness before Eddie's goal.

I thought the Sheffield United FA Cup win was our best performance of the restart so far. With the exception of their hilarious equaliser, I'd say that we defended really well and there were some brilliant individual displays. Tierney and Pepe were both magnificent on the day, and I even thought that Xhaka was a real force in our midfield too!

While it hasn't exactly been the flawless restart that I was expecting from us, there's been enough positives to fill me with confidence that better days are on the horizon. If we somehow manage to get one over on City at Wembley, then FA Cup glory is a real possibility and what an achievement that would be for Arteta in his first season!

I want you to tell me which Arsenal players should win the following awards at the end of this season; Player of the Season, Young Player of the Season, Most Improved Player, and Worst Player! Send me your thoughts to [email protected] and my favourite replies will feature in next week's email!

GROUNDHOG DAY

Amongst all this talk of Auba’s contract fiasco, it’s gone slightly under the radar that the club are also yet to announce any news on another big contract.

You know exactly who I'm talking about, right? It's the wonderkid Saka! I absolutely love this guy. Saka had been one of our best players before football was stopped and he was really beginning to emerge as a pivotal part of Arteta's plans.

Saka's currently still on a very modest youth contract and I'm starting to get a little bit nervous about the lack of updates on his situation.

With plenty of top clubs across Europe rumoured to be circling (Liverpool & Bayern Munich to name just two), we can’t afford to let this situation rumble on for too much longer.

I'm just beginning to get a bit sick and tired of these never ending dramas that seem to follow whenever we're trying to get a player to extend their deal. Contract negotiations never seem to be an easy thing for us to sort and they haven't done for years now.

I'm not sure if it's just because I live in a bit of an Arsenal bubble, but we seem to be the only club in the world that has such a hard time getting (good) players to renew their deals.

It just all feels an awful lot like groundhog day!

"ARSENAL HAVE THE KEYS"

While we all know that Auba is a master at hitting the back of the net, what you might not have known about our captain is that he’s also great at setting riddles.

Auba has described his contract situation as something that “Arsenal have the keys to” and it's left me scratching my head at what exactly it is that he means by that.

It could mean one of two things. Auba is either referring to the fact that the club need to offer him the wage that he wants, and, let’s be honest, the wage he quite rightfully deserves considering our reliance on him.

Or, our skipper is trying to say that he’s waiting to see the club’s commitment to investing in the squad to ensure that we can satisfy his demands for Champions League football next season.

Arteta has said that he's "positive" that an outcome can be reached that suits all parties. Auba doesn't strike me as the greedy type, so any decision that he makes is going to be one predominantly based on football. He's 30 years old now and with the exception of a couple of German Cups, Auba hasn't really got any huge honours to his name. He deserves to be at a club that can give him a serious chance of winning a massive trophy like the Champions League.

While we’re talking about Auba, if you haven't yet seen him on MTV Cribs, then you definitely need to. I was actually quite shocked by the contents of his fridge, in particular his very apparent love of Aero yoghurts.

Happy football eve, ladies and gentlemen!

In a little over 24 hours, the long wait will finally be over as the boys get our season back up and running again when they face Man City.

I'm terrified and excited in equal measure about the restart! How’re you feeling?

NOT SO FRIENDLY, FRIENDLIES

Arteta has been busy whipping the squad into shape not only in training, but also through two friendlies that were played in the comfort of an empty Emirates.

The first friendly, a 6-0 win against Charlton, well, that one went perfectly! Laca scored an amazing goal, Eddie bagged a hat-trick, and Willock showed a glimpse of what he’s really capable of.

However, the second friendly, a 3-2 defeat against Championship side Brentford, that one didn’t quite go to plan. I’m sure you would have seen that every fan base under the sun poked fun at us after that result was announced. The beautiful irony of their jokes came when Spurs and Man United both lost friendlies two days later. Isn't karma just a wonderful thing?

While a defeat to Brentford isn’t exactly the ideal prep for a game against the reigning champions, it’s also not quite time to get the pitchforks out just yet!

Without dwelling on the result of a friendly match too much, there’s a couple of things that I have to mention about the Brentford game. In fact, I need you all to help me with something. Can someone please explain to me what Luiz was doing on Brentford’s first goal?!

Xhaka also didn't feature against Brentford, while Maitland-Niles has been deployed in a central midfield role in both friendlies - something to keep an eye on there.

I’m quietly confident that we can give Man City a real run for their money on Wednesday, just as long as we don’t defend like we did against Brentford! Let’s all be positive about this restart, shall we? I’ll be wearing my bruised banana kit and cheering the boys on from my sofa with a beer in hand. Who will you be watching the game with?

What're your realistic aims for us from now until the end of the season? Can we sneak into the top four? Should the FA Cup be our priority? Send me your thoughts to [email protected] and my favourite replies will feature in next week's email!

FRESH AUBAMEYANG OFFER

It's the story that just won't go away. Will he stay? Or will he go?

I'm of course talking about the main man Auba. Our captain, our leading goalscorer, and our best player. The latest rumours are that the club has just made a new contract offer to try and convince him to stay.

A two-year extension is reportedly on the table for Auba and you can imagine that the salary and bonuses involved in this offer are absolutely outrageous. But, when you think about just how much we depend on Auba, it's probably a price worth paying, right?

Those rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid, Barcelona or even Man United *shudders* just don't seem to be going away anytime soon.

I don't want to alarm any of you, but here's a reminder that as things stand, on June 30th 2021, Auba will be walking out the door at the Emirates for a grand total of £0.

Come on, Auba. If you're reading this, we all want you to stay!

02/06/2020

Afternoon, Gooners!

Well folks, the wait is almost over.

June 17th is the date that we're pencilled in for a return to action and our first match back is the small matter of a trip to *checks notes* Man City... are we sure that we definitely want football back?!

THE *REAL* COST OF LUIZ

Not much surprises me in football nowadays, but this story about Luiz is one that blew my mind.

Arsenal fan and journalist Amy Lawrence wrote a brilliant piece for The Athletic last week in which she uncovered the truth about the finances involved in the deal to bring Luiz to north London.

Now, I've spoken before in great detail about my concerns around us using 'super agents' and in the case of this deal, it was the notorious Kia Joorabchian who seemed to have benefited more than anyone else.

Amy's report uncovered that Luiz could end up costing Arsenal a whopping £24m for his one season stay with us. Yep, you read that correctly... £24m for a single year of Luiz. That's hardly value for money!

This breaks down as an £8m transfer fee to Chelsea, as much as £6m to intermediaries/agents to fix everything up, and the rest on the Brazilian's £10m-a-year salary.

It was revealed last week that Luiz hadn't actually signed the reported two-year deal when he joined us last summer, but only a one-year deal with the option of a further year, should Arsenal decide to extend it. That option has so far remained untouched and is due to expire on June 30th.

As hot and cold as Luiz has been for us this season, part of me almost wants us to extend his deal for another year, just so that we get more for our money!

I find it absolutely bonkers that you can pay almost as much to an agent as you do to a club to sign a player nowadays...

What do you think about the Luiz story? Would you take up the option to extend his contract for another year? Send me your thoughts to [email protected] and my favourite replies will feature in next week's email!

UNUSUAL AWAY KIT

Another newsletter, another new kit for you to feast your eyes on!

This week it's our away kit that has leaked and, well, it's safe to say that it's a pretty unusual one, even by Arsenal's standards.

I mentioned this in my last Added Arsenal, but I don't think that we should ever have a white kit, that's just my personal opinion! However, I think that I might actually quite like this one... is that crazy?

I can imagine that it's one of those kits that looks a bit strange on its own, but when it's matched up with the shorts, socks, and the players are wearing it on the pitch, then it suddenly looks a lot better.

There's rumours that the redcurrant marks are supposed to represent the famous marble halls of Highbury? I'm not too sure about that. To me they look a lot more like blood splats. It could almost be someone's shirt from the Walking Dead!

What do you think about the new away kit? Love it? Hate it?

Let me know your thoughts!
