Eat to Fuel Your Body, Not Just for Taste
I talk about the importance of eating to fuel your body rather than just for taste, and how combining both taste and good fuel creates a winning combination.

A Woman can lose weight and still be metabolically unhealthy.
That’s one of the biggest lessons from this week’s research on men 35+.
We’ve spent years reducing metabolic health to one question:
“How much weight have you lost?”
But weight alone tells us very little about what is actually happening underneath.
A new systematic review found that greater fat stored within and around skeletal muscle was associated with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
So two women can have a similar BMI and body-fat percentage while carrying very different metabolic risk.
Another major analysis looked at people with type 2 diabetes AND fatty liver.
Exercise improved fasting glucose, HbA1c, insulin resistance, triglycerides, LDL and several liver markers.
That matters.
Because exercise shouldn’t simply be viewed as a way to “burn more calories.”
It is part of improving the metabolic machinery itself.
And there was another important finding.
When researchers compared different exercise approaches for metabolic syndrome, combined resistance and aerobic training performed extremely well across multiple outcomes.
Not bodybuilding alone.
Not endless cardio.
Not HIIT every morning until your knees hate you.
The boring combination keeps winning:
Strength training 2–4 times per week.
Regular aerobic conditioning.
Daily walking and movement.
HIIT where appropriate.
Nutrition that supports fat loss while preserving muscle.
And enough consistency to actually allow those interventions to work.
This is why I think women over 35 need to stop making body weight and using the little pinky dumbbell the entire scoreboard.
I’d rather monitor:
Waist circumference.
Strength.
Cardiovascular fitness.
Daily movement.
Sleep.
Blood pressure.
HbA1c.
Lipids.
Liver markers when medically available.
And, of course, body-weight trends.
Because the goal shouldn’t simply be:
“Get lighter.”
It should be:
Lose excess fat.
Build and preserve muscle.
Improve fitness.
Improve metabolic health.
Become physically harder to break.
That is a very different standard.
Especially once you’re over 35.
The scale is one metric. It should never be the whole definition of progress. Women 35+: struggling to lose fat despite ‘doing everything right’? Comment SEASON and I’ll show you the 4 markers I’d assess before cutting more calorie

Women over 35: before you blame menopause for your weight, tell me how much fibre you ate yesterday.
Because I keep seeing the same pattern.
Protein powder.
Creatine.
Collagen.
Magnesium.
“Menopause support” supplements.
Detox teas.
But ask about vegetables, fruit, beans or whole grains?
Silence.
We’ve somehow made fat loss so complicated that basic nutrition now feels revolutionary.
Let me be clear:
Fibre does NOT burn belly fat.
It doesn’t detox your body.
It doesn’t magically fix your hormones.
And taking a fibre supplement doesn’t give you permission to ignore the rest of your diet.
But fibre matters.
A 2025 review of 51 randomised trials involving more than 3,400 adults with overweight or obesity found that dietary fibre interventions produced modest improvements in fasting glucose, insulin and insulin resistance.
That’s useful.
Especially for women over 35 struggling with body composition and metabolic health.
But the real advantage of fibre is much simpler.
It can make eating fewer calories less miserable.
Compare 400 calories of biscuits and chocolate with 400 calories built around Greek yoghurt, berries, oats and seeds.
Same calories.
Very different meal.
One gives you significantly more protein, fibre, volume and nutritional value.
Which one do you think is more likely to keep you satisfied for the next few hours?
That’s nutrition coaching.
Not finding another supplement.
For many women, 25–30+ grams of fibre per day is a sensible practical target.
But don’t go from 12g to 35g overnight and then wonder why your stomach feels like a balloon.
Build it gradually.
Drink enough water.
And prioritise actual food:
Vegetables. Fruit. Beans. Lentils. Oats. Whole grains. Potatoes. Nuts. Seeds.
My hierarchy for fat loss remains simple:
Calories → Protein → Fibre & food quality → Meal structure → Supplements when actually necessary.
We need to stop turning every problem women experience after 35 into a hormone problem requiring another product.
Sometimes the basics aren’t sexy.
They’re just effective.
Before buying another “menopause fat-loss” supplement, open your food tracker.
How much fibre did you actually eat yesterday?
