Be more like The Shard. šļø
The tallest building in London is actually a brilliant way to understand mental health and resilience.
Let me explain.
The foundations underneath The Shard represent your beliefs:
ā¢ā Your general beliefs about life
ā¢ā Your self-esteem and the beliefs you hold about yourself
And the building above the ground?
That represents your thinking.
So if the foundations arenāt strong, the building becomes wobbly.
Cue:
ā Negative thinking.
ā Overthinking.
ā Perfectionism.
ā Catastrophic thinking.
ā Overwhelm.
And over time, this thinking can create some pretty horrible symptoms from low mood, anxiety and panic to stress, phobias and dependencies.
Because whilst the symptoms show up above groundā¦the root cause is often underneath.
Now, does that mean strong people never wobble?
Of course not.
Even The Shard moves in strong winds.
But it wobbles far less because of the strength of the foundations holding it steady.
And humans are exactly the same.
The stronger the foundations:
ā
The more resilient you become
ā
The faster you bounce back
ā
The calmer you stay during adversity
ā
The better you handle uncertainty and pressure
Thatās mental fitness.
So during Mental Health Awareness Month, donāt just focus on the symptoms.
Focus on the foundations š

There arenāt enough leaders following the high-performance strategy of:
š āPut your own oxygen mask on first.ā
And yet⦠it changes everything.
Because if youāre exhausted, overwhelmed, emotionally running on empty, or trying to be everything to everyoneā¦
You cannot lead at your best.
Mental health matters because YOU matter.
Your consistency, focus, energy, and presence matter.
And looking after yourself isnāt selfish.
Itās self-leadership.
So what does āputting your oxygen mask on firstā actually look like?
āļø Boundaries
āļø Saying no to protect your yeses
āļø Exercise, recovery, rest, friendships, and laughter
āļø Doing more of what makes you happy
Because leadership can become performative.
So many leaders feel like theyāve got something to prove.
To their team.
To the people above them.
To the job title.
(I know the old me did.)
And underneath that is often pressure, people-pleasing, insecurity, or fear of not being enough.
So they sacrifice themselves in the name of performance.
But hereās the irony:
š the very thing they think is making them successfulā¦
is often the thing slowly burning them out.
š„ Drivers:
You think slowing down will cost you performanceā¦
but burnout costs you far more.
š Analysts:
You cannot get things done to the standard youāre after if your nervous system is constantly under pressure.
š©· Caretakers:
You deserve care too.
And when you look after yourself properly, you show up even better for others.
š Explorers:
You cannot keep pouring from an empty cup whilst spinning 100 plates.
Mental fitness is not a luxury.
š Itās the foundation of sustainable high performance.
Because when you put your own oxygen mask on firstā¦
you lead better.
You think clearer.
You perform more consistently.
And ultimatelyā¦
isnāt that what every great leader actually wants?

Itās Mental Health Awareness Week.
And leaders⦠mental fitness matters.
Not just mental health.
Mental fitness.
Because fitness implies something different.
šSomething active.
šSomething you build.
šSomething you work on daily.
Just like physical fitness.
Mental fitness is:
š§ Your clarity of thought
āØYour ability to be present
šYour ability to respond, not react
And as a leader⦠thatās everything.
Because your team doesnāt just feel your decisions
āŖļøThey feel your energy
āŖļøYour pressure
āŖļøYour presence
Youāre probably starting to see why this isnāt optional.
Itās a necessity.
This week, Iām breaking down what mental fitness looks like in leadership
and how to build it in a way that actually lasts šŖ.
Follow along.

Earlier this week, we shared a quick guide to the four personality styles that affect everything when it comes to leadership, and over the next few weeks weāll be sharing a deeper look into each type.
First up⦠the Driver ā¤ļø
Drivers are often the people pushing things forward. Decisive, ambitious, competitive and brilliant at creating momentum.
But when that drive is overplayed, it can start to impact the very people youāre trying to lead.
You move so quickly that others struggle to keep up. You step in too fast. You focus so heavily on outcomes that relationships and buy-in can get overlooked without you even realising it.
The interesting thing about Drivers is that they usually have very high standards, both for themselves and everyone around them. The intention is rarely negative⦠but the impact can be.
Swipe through this carousel for a deeper look at the Driver personality style, including the strengths, blind spots and leadership shifts that can completely change how your team experiences you š

Leaders⦠be the bison, not the cow.
When a storm comes:
Cows run away
Bison turn into it
One delays the storm
One gets through it
Leadership is the same.
When things get tough:
Donāt avoid it
Donāt wait it out
Lean in
Lead through it
Be the leader who calmly walks into the storm
Your team is watching
Be the bison š¦¬

CQ is the multiplier.
IQ = what you know
EQ = how you lead people
But in todayās world?
Thatās not enough.
Because leadership now = leading through āļøconstant changeāļø
AI.
Uncertainty.
Curveballs.
š The real differentiator? CQ: Change Intelligence
Your ability to:
ā
Stay calm in chaos
ā
Adapt quickly
ā
Lead without all the answers
ā
Thrive in the grey
You can have high IQ.
You can have strong EQ.
But without CQā¦
Youāll struggle when it matters most.
Extraordinary leaders donāt just manage people.
š„They lead confidently through change.
Thatās CQ.
And thatās the multiplier.

Who do you think you are? š¤
Leadership begins with self-leadership, and self-leadership starts with self-awareness.Ā
Before you can lead others brilliantly, you must first learn to lead yourself, and the easiest place to start is by understanding your own natural preferences - your strengths, your blind spots, and the behaviours you may want to develop.
Every major psychometric out there - Myers-Briggs, Insights, DISC - ultimately maps back to these same four core personality styles. Most of us have elements of each, and many of us have a dominant style (and often a strong secondary). This isnāt about putting yourself in a box, itās about raising awareness of where you are today, so you can grow into who you want to become
And letās make one thing absolutely clear: ANY personality style can become an extraordinary leader.
The best leaders simply understand their natural preferences, and then learn to flex into all four styles so they can connect, communicate, and inspire more effectively. Use this guide to discover your lead style and unlock your next level of leadership.
Keep an eye out on my page over the next few weeks for a deep dive into each personality style, and find out how you can use yours to unlock your next level of leadership.

Leaders⦠be honest with yourself for a second.
Are your 1:1s intentional⦠or are they just happening?
Because this is one of the biggest missed opportunities I see inside teams.
Youāve got regular, dedicated time with your people⦠and yet so often it turns into a quick catch-up, a reactive conversation, or something that gets squeezed between everything else.
Thatās not where growth happens.
When done properly, 1:1s build confidence, accountability and performance. Theyāre where you develop your people and raise the standard across your team.
Thatās exactly why I follow the F.R.A.M.E framework.
Simple. Structured. Effective.
Take a look through this and ask yourself honestly⦠where could your 1:1s be better?
And if youāre ready to lead your team at a completely different level, get in touch to find out more about my Extraordinary Leader programme š„
