Better Launches ‘Active April’ to Support Local Carers

To mark the 61st anniversary of Carers UK, all Better Leisure Centres in [insert partnership] are partnering with the charity to offer carers discounted access to fitness facilities during ‘Active April’ from 1st April to 1st May 2026.

Throughout this period, Carers UK members and those receiving Carer’s Allowance can access Better leisure centres at a discounted rate of £34 per month. This membership includes access to the gym, swimming pool, fitness classes.

The initiative aims to highlight the importance of physical activity for carers, with research showing that 67% of unpaid carers feel more connected to others when they stay active.

GLL Chief Executive Peter Bundey emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting carers, stating, “We recognise the vital role that carers play in their communities and want to help improve their health and well-being through this initiative.”

Carers UK Chief Executive Helen Walker welcomed the partnership, encouraging carers to take advantage of these opportunities to improve their well-being, reduce stress, and connect with others.

You don't have to be an elite athlete to benefit from the scheme. If you're coming within the top 8 of regional competitions you will be eligible for an award.

If yes, your local ‘Better’ leisure centre in Hillingdon needs you! Join the annual ‘Better’ Club Games, known as the ‘Older Persons’ Olympics,’ where teams from leisure centres in London, the south-east, and the Midlands compete in indoor sports like Bowls, Swimming, Darts, and more.

The event is on Wednesday, 1st October at Copper Box Arena in Stratford. Sign up by 19th September to join the fun - no need to be a pro, just bring your enthusiasm!

Each year features a celebrity ambassador; this year, actress Su Pollard will support the contestants. Don't miss out!

On Wednesday night at the Botwell Green Sport and Leisure Centre, we came together to celebrate the GLL Sport Foundation 2025 Awardees from Hillingdon.

We were privileged to have the Mayor of Hillingdon, Councillor Phillip Corthorne, alongside Colin Coughtrey, GLL's National Engagement Manager, presenting the awards to each athlete, plus a special goody bag.

The evening was truly inspiring, filled with stories of perseverance and a collective dedication to excellence. Each athlete reminded us that success is not solely defined by victories but also by the journey taken to achieve them.

On Wednesday 10th July 2024 Hillingdon celebrated its GLL Sport Foundation annual awards evening!



It was a great turnout with a number of athletes; Cllrs; coaches and family in attendance.

The evening included:

· Bhangra dance demonstration from Virse De Waris - Bhangra Group

· Food and drinks

· Q&A with

· Closing speech from the Mayor of Hillingdon

The GLL Sport Foundation is proud to be the largest independent athletes support programme of its kind in the UK. This year in Hillingdon, we are sponsoring 51 local athletes in over 18 different sports!

What an incredible GLL Club Games! The Better Hillingdon Team 2023 was amazing and even placed second in some events!

This annual GLL event for Hillingdon residents aged 60+ has residents battling it out in a variety of sports (including darts, bowls, and badminton) against other boroughs at the prestigious Copper Box Arena.

It was a fantastic day out and a huge, well done to all those who attended and competed! We hope next year will be even bigger and Better for Team Hillingdon!
