Gratitude – A PRACTICAL GUIDE

I’ve really noticed a difference over the last week as I’ve had a heightened awareness of my own gratitude experiences. I’ve often struggled to get results from commonly recommended gratitude practices so I’m sharing a practical method that I’ve come up with for myself. It’s taken time to come up with this, understand how to apply it daily and to get it in writing. I’m still getting better at it but it’s definitely working! I hope this will help you to also spend more time in a state of gratitude!

I’ve come up with an acronym to make it easier for me to remember: ‘HERD’😊 I like to think of it this way… I’m going to ‘herd’ my gratitude experiences, bringing them together, not letting any be missed or escape.

Gratitude HERD

H Heighten your awareness of what gratitude looks and feels like for you. Be on the lookout all the time, make it your mission to notice every time you experience gratitude, even for the tiniest things.

E Embrace it! When you experience gratitude, embrace it in a bigger way than you normally would. Say something out loud about how you’re feeling, if it involves someone else, tell them! Stop and just be in the moment and enjoy the feeling. If it’s a biggie and you’re alone, call someone and tell them about it.

R Reflect – think about the triggers for the feelings, the situations, places, people and activities that make you feel grateful. Plan more of these in your life and remember for next time to be on the look out for those feelings of gratitude!

D Document – capture the moment somehow to reinforce the experience, take a photo, make a video about it, write about it, whatever works for you at the time. If you choose to write down your experiences, I recommend being very specific about the situation and feelings at the time. Whichever way you capture the moment, add enough detail so that you can re-live the moment later when you see the photo, watch the video or read the journal entry.

Happy HERDing 😊

GRATITUDE – What are the benefits?

My journey to better understanding gratitude lead me to dive a little deeper into the benefits and think about the specific areas where we see positive changes.

Here are 5 benefits that I value:

1. Positive Outlook: Having a positive outlook can impact every aspect of life and one of the best ways to achieve and maintain this is by being in state of gratitude.
2. Creativity: I’ve noticed that when things go wrong and I’m stuck in the emotion of the issue, I stop being creative. But, the opposite is true when I’m in a state of gratitude, creativity flows freely and I wonder how I ever got stuck for ideas before. We need the right mindset to support creativity and a state of gratitude is a great way to achieve this.
3. Resilience: Business (and life) is full of challenge, it’s how we deal with these challenges that makes all the difference. In addition to having a clear purpose, gratitude is another key tool for tackling challenges in your personal and business life. In the face of challenges, gratitude helps us stay resilient. If we can focus on what's going right (not the thing that’s gone wrong), we can navigate obstacles with a clearer, more positive outlook.
4. Relationships: If we are in a state of gratitude the positive impact on our relationships is huge. You can probably think of times when you were in a particularly grateful state when interacting with other people and you noticed the positive vibes coming right back at you. I’m most aware of this when we travel as a family, when we are all grateful for adventure and freedom every day, for me these are the best times!

The flow on from all of these benefits are the RESULTS we are able to achieve. Spending more time in a state of gratitude brings many benefits and enables a quicker path to the results we want in our business and life.

Next I’m looking at practical ways to achieve a gratitude mindset that have worked for me.

GRATITUDE – How do we know when we're in a state of gratitude?

Continuing with the theme of gratitude this week I’m sharing the story of the experience that got me started on my gratitude journey.

I took this photo when I was in Melbourne recently for a weekend event for two of my kids. The two days they were at the event was the first time in my life I was in a foreign city, alone, on holiday (not for work or a conference).

I first morning, I was walking into the city and I became overwhelmed by gratitude. It was an amazing feeling, I teared up and couldn’t see well so decided to sit down and just 'be' in the moment. I was feeling so grateful and happy walking into the city, free to explore Melbourne again for the first time in 20 years.

This experience set the scene for the most amazing two days of exploring and just ‘being’ in Melbourne. I had the most lovely interactions with locals and I loved everything about my weekend. This experience of gratitude had a positive impact on me for days.

This experience of gratitude literally stopped me in my tracks! It got me thinking about how I often I feel gratitude on a smaller scale and don’t even consciously realise it. Does this happen multiple times a day, some days not at all?

So another concept I’ve been exploring is, how do we know when we’re in a state of gratitude?

Gratitude is an emotion that we can feel and experience in our body. In a state of gratitude we experience a shift in perspective, seeing challenges as opportunities for growth and setbacks as temporary hurdles on your journey. Experiencing gratitude is to have a transformative mindset that fosters resilience and emotional well-being.

I'm wondering if we can we train ourselves to be more conscious of even the smallest experiences of gratitude (that we already have), and shift our state to one of gratitude this way?

AFFIRMATION: I will be conscious of and appreciate every time I experience gratitude today.

GRATITUDE

This week I’m focusing on gratitude. I’m on a journey of understanding my relationship with gratitude in a deeper way and I’m hoping this will be helpful for others as well. Especially those of you who like me, haven’t had a lot of success with the structured gratitude practices like journalling.

I’m looking at what gratitude actually is, how you know when you’re experiencing it, how you can benefit from it and practical ways to practice gratitude (different from the common recommendations I’ve seen).

I believe that if we can shift into a state of gratitude it can positively impact everything we do, every interaction we have and help us to get the RESULTS we desire, quicker. The opposite is also true, and I had a huge learning experience around this last year. When things go wrong we feel negative emotions and that’s normal, BUT, if we allow ourselves to STAY in a place of ungratefulness, or of disappointment, fear, distrust, we often attract more negativity into our lives.

Today I’m starting with the basics….so firstly, what is gratitude?

Gratitude is recognising and acknowledging the good things in your life, both big and small, and feeling a sense of warmth and contentment because of them. Gratitude is an attitude of appreciation under any circumstance. It means appreciating life daily, even when nothing exciting happens.

AFFIRMATION: I will appreciate the small things today, the things I take for granted most days.

DAILY AFFIRMATION

I love this quote and aspire to be more like this. It’s going to be a life long process for me but I’m getting better at it. If Anthony Hopkins is a 9.5 out of 10 (there’s always room for improvement 😉), I think I’ve spent most of my life at a 2 but I’m heading for a solid 5 these days. A long way to go but wow does it feel good to be moving in the right direction on this one. Plus it frees up so much more space in your brain for empowering, positive and creative thoughts!

Affirmation: I will spend less time worrying about what other people think of me.

GOAL SETTING – BOOK A 1 HOUR SESSION

A few days ago I posted about the importance of having a clear purpose as a business owner, especially on the hard days! But obviously we need more than a high level purpose to run our business and this is where goals come in.

I like to set and review my BIG GOALS every 12 months and then break these down into smaller goals and actions to review every 3 months.

I’ve recently completed setting my goals for the next 12 months. Next I’ll break these big goals down into smaller goals and tasks for April to June. I’ll write these up and keep them visible near my desk as a constant reminder of the bigger picture and to keep me on track 😊

How are you going with your goals this year in business and life? Would you benefit from a one-off goal setting session with me to plan out your next 12 months? You’d be surprised how much difference 1 hour can make to gaining clarity and setting measurable goals. Plus once your goals are in place, I can help to keep you accountable with 15 minute coaching calls and a coaching app that will send you reminders and track your progress.

Get in touch to find out more, let’s work together to make the next 12 months your best yet!

HOW DO YOU MEDITATE?

Zen Saying
"You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes a day. Unless you're too busy, then you should sit for an hour."

I love this saying but realistically if I can manage 5 minutes I’m happy and that’s enough to make a difference for me. I’m building meditation back into my daily routine and aiming for longer but I’m starting small to make sure it actually happens! The biggest thing I notice when I’m stressed is that I stop breathing properly so adding in daily meditation guarantees some conscious quality breathing every day.

I think the best learning I’ve had about meditation is that you need to do it your way. I only started quite recently because the versions I had heard for years didn’t work for me. Now that I know what works for me it’s much easier.

Recently I’ve been listening to a ‘letting go meditation’ by Donna D’Cruz on Spotify. If I have longer I repeat it, if I don’t have my phone I do a similar breathing and affirmations exercise from memory without the audio.

So here is your reminder to take time today to breathe well, even if it’s just one really long slow breath😊

💡IDEAS💡

How often have you had a great idea but done nothing about it? Why not❓ Maybe it’s an amazing idea, maybe it’s not… but you won’t know until you test it out. What’s one step you can take today to get your ideas out of your head and into the world?

- Write them down
- List the positive attributes of your ideas
- Research the ideas/topics
- Write a plan for bringing them to life – what existing skills can you utilise, would you need to upskill, would it be useful to partner with someone?
- Test them out – take action and implement

Make today the day🎉

🤔THOUGHT OF THE DAY: I will take my ideas seriously and dedicate time to getting them out of my head.
