If the swim is the part of triathlon you worry about most, you’re not alone. 🏊‍♂️

A lot of triathletes can complete the distance…

but they still don’t trust what will happen once fatigue, race pressure, sighting and open water are added.
And when technique starts to break down, confidence usually follows.
Your head lifts.
Your body position changes.
Breathing becomes rushed.
You start working harder.
And suddenly the swim feels much bigger than it should.

That’s why race confidence doesn’t come from simply knowing you can survive the distance.
It comes from knowing your technique can hold when the conditions get harder.

Start with the basics.
Build control.
Then build speed and endurance on top of that. ⚡

Comment “TRIATHLON” if the swim is still the part of your race you feel least confident about.

A strong kick does not mean kicking as hard as possible for the entire swim. 🏊‍♂️

For triathletes, the kick has a job:
✅ Support body position
✅ Maintain rhythm
✅ Help balance the stroke
✅ Add speed when it is actually needed

If you are constantly over-kicking just to keep yourself moving, you may be spending energy you will want later on the bike and run. 🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️

That is why efficiency matters.
The goal is to make your whole stroke work together so your legs are contributing — not compensating for problems elsewhere.

Good triathlon swimming is not about winning the swim with your legs.
It is about exiting the water ready to race the rest of the course.

If you’re fit on the bike and run but swimming still drains you, the answer is not always “get fitter.” 👀

Sometimes the problem is how efficiently you’re using the fitness you already have.
If your catch is weak or you’re slipping through the water, every stroke costs more.

More strokes.
More effort.
More fatigue.

That is where sculling can help. 🏊‍♂️
It teaches you to feel pressure through the hands and forearms so you can connect with the water before applying power.

For triathletes, this matters because the goal is not simply to survive the swim.

It is to get out of the water with enough energy left to perform on the bike and run. ⚡
Don’t just add more effort.
Make the effort you already produce more effective.

Comment “COACH” if you want help identifying what’s costing you energy in the water.

A lot of triathletes don’t plateau because they aren’t training hard enough.
They plateau because the training isn’t fixing the real problem. 👀

You can swim more lengths, push harder and complete every session on your plan — but if your technique is breaking down, your efficiency is poor, or nobody is giving you feedback, more effort can simply create more fatigue.
The goal is not to do more for the sake of doing more.

It’s to train with purpose.
✅ Know what you’re trying to improve
✅ Fix the technical limitation
✅ Get feedback
✅ Build efficiency before adding more intensity
That’s how you turn training into actual performance. 🏊‍♂️⚡

Sighting shouldn’t cost you your stroke. 🌊

One small mistake can make a big difference in open water: lifting your head too high.

When your head comes up too much, your hips can drop, your drag increases, and suddenly every sight takes more effort than it should.

Good sighting is about finding the right balance:
👀 See where you’re going
🏊 Keep your body position
💨 Stay relaxed
🎯 Get straight back into your rhythm

The goal isn’t to stop swimming every time you need to look forward.

It’s to sight while keeping your stroke efficient.

And just like any part of your swim, it gets better with practice.

If your swim pace has stopped improving, the answer is not always to pull harder. 👀

Butterfly makes this easy to see.
When timing is off, power gets wasted.
The same thing happens in front crawl.
You can be strong, fit and highly motivated — but if your body position, catch, breathing or timing are inefficient, more effort often just creates more fatigue. 🏊‍♂️

That’s why good swimmers don’t simply produce more force.
They apply it at the right time and in the right position.
For triathletes, this matters even more because you’re not training for one isolated swim.

You need technique that saves energy and still works when pace and fatigue increase. ⚡

Before you add more volume or intensity, ask:

Is my technique actually allowing my fitness to translate into speed?

Your dolphin kick shouldn’t come from forcing the legs. 🏊‍♂️
With the arms extended, the goal is to stay long through the body and let the movement travel from the core and hips.
Think:
✅ Long streamline
✅ Core engaged
✅ Hips driving the rhythm
✅ Legs following the movement
✅ Smooth, controlled kicks
When you force the legs, you usually create more tension and waste energy.
When the movement starts from the body, the kick becomes more fluid, more efficient and easier to sustain. ⚡
That same principle matters in longer-distance and triathlon swimming too: efficiency first, power second.

If swimming still feels harder than it should, the answer isn’t always “get fitter.” 👀

A lot of the time, the real problem is in the fundamentals.

Head position affects your body line.
Breathing affects your rhythm.
Your catch affects how much distance you get from each stroke.

When those pieces are off, you create more drag, use more energy and make every length feel harder than it needs to.

The goal is not to fight the water.
It’s to move through it with more control, confidence and efficiency. 🏊‍♂️
Master the fundamentals first — then build speed on top of them.

If your knees are doing most of the work, your kick is probably costing you more energy than it should. 👀

Too much knee bend creates extra resistance and can make the movement feel heavy and inefficient.
A better kick starts from the hips, with the legs staying long and the movement controlled. 🏊‍♂️

Think:
✅ Drive from the hips
✅ Keep the knees relaxed
✅ Keep the kick small
✅ Stay long through the body

For triathletes, this matters because efficiency is everything.

You don’t want to waste energy fighting the water before you even reach the bike. ⚡
Train the movement properly first — then build speed.

Save this for your next swim. 💾

If your legs keep sinking, your first instinct might be to kick harder.

But that is not always the real problem.
Your head position influences the line of your entire body.

If you constantly look too far forward, your upper body can rise while your hips and legs begin to drop.
And once that happens, you create more drag.
So you kick harder.
You use more energy.
And swimming starts to feel much harder than it should.

For a triathlete, that wasted energy matters.
You want to exit the water controlled and ready for the bike — not already tired from fighting your own body position.

Before adding more effort, look at the position first.

Fix the line. Then build the speed.

Comment “COACH” if your legs keep sinking and you are not sure why.
