SG Pipers stayed top of the standings as they defeated JSW Soorma Hockey Club 3-1 in their Women’s Hero Hockey India League encounter at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi on Saturday. Even though Soorma managed to end their long wait for a goal in the tournament and took the lead on the night, the defeat all but ends their hope of finishing in the top two.For the Pipers, Lola Riera (13’), Jyoti Singh (18’), and Sunelita Toppo (58’) scored a goal each, while Penny Squibb (12’) netted the only goal for the Soorma. The opening quarter saw an intense end-to-end battle, with the teams trading early attacks and testing each other in a high-tempo start. Soorma struck first when Squibb – who missed a Penalty Stroke on Friday in the defeat against Ranchi Royals – converted a penalty corner to give her side the lead. SG Pipers responded immediately, maintaining their attacking pressure and earning back-to-back penalty corners.

In a match that ebbed and flowed one way then the other, it was the goalkeeper Princedeep Singh who had the final say at the same end of the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai where he announced his arrival during the FIH Junior World Cup. With far fewer fans around than that night when he starred in the shootout against Belgium to help India win the quarterfinal, he was brought on by Tamil Nadu Dragons just for the tiebreaker against Hyderabad Toofans at the end of what had been a sensational 3-3 draw in regulation time of the Hockey India League season opener. And the youngster from Pathankot, who shifted to goalkeeping from defence because he was inspired by PR Sreejesh, produced two superb saves to hand Dragons the bonus point. Before the shootout, Dragons and Toofans produced a rollercoaster that was played at breakneck speed.

Indian hockey is gearing up for a big challenge in 2026, with the World Cup and Asian Games separated by less than three weeks. For men’s team head coach Craig Fulton, it presents a puzzle to solve because he can’t afford to ignore one for the other. A World Cup medal has long eluded Indian hockey, while Asian Games winner qualifies for LA 2028.Speaking to The Indian Express after India’s recent block of matches plus training at Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and in South Africa, Fulton elaborated on how he’s planning to tackle the upcoming schedule. Excerpts below:Every time you go to South Africa, there is something unique that you plan for the team…In South Africa, we had quite a big focus on the off-field team build and sessions with Paddy (Upton), which worked well, and the performance and the training with the goalkeeper coach also worked. We had the Lion’s Head trek. It’s quite a steep incline. It’s on the same height as Table Mountain. So now we’ve done both of those.

It took Ranchi Royals forward Araijeet Singh Hundal just 40 seconds to find space inside the circle among a crowd of defenders and win a Penalty Corner for Ranchi Royals from which FIH World Player of the Year 2025 Tom Boon fired a bullet past Krishan Pathak in goal. Then in the ninth minute, Mandeep Singh converted with a cheeky touch from close range after a flowing pass move, with Pathak’s positioning questionable once more as Kalinga Lancers trailed 1-2. It must have brought back memories of last season when the franchise scored freely, but conceded with equal regularity to eventually miss out on top four, despite arguably having one of the best squads on paper.
But what followed in the remaining three quarters augurs well for Lancers as they displayed most of their good attacking traits while marrying that with solid defensive structure. Three goals flowed in the second quarter as they went from 1-2 to 4-2.
