One of the biggest misconceptions about starting and growing a business at scale is what it takes, people often think you have to be motivated. You don’t.
Past motivation, it then comes down to discipline and to be honest, past a certain point, I don’t even think it’s about discipline. Discipline is being able to do what you need to do, even when you don’t feel like it.
Building a business at scale will test you so far beyond both motivation and discipline. It will test how much pressure you can handle, how many setbacks you can take, how many days you can take when wake up and go to sleep when you’re only thoughts in your mind are the challenges in front of you and how many times you can get knocked down before you decide you’ve had enough.
Everyone wants to know how to become more motivated, more disciplined, and more productive. I think the more important question is how much can you take, and still keep going?
Building a business isn’t just about how hard you can work when things are going well. It’s about who you become when you’re working through things you have never experienced before and when you haven’t felt that level of pressure and stress before.
The most messed up thing about it all? This is the place you have to feel most alive in, in a sick way you almost have to learn to enjoy your back being against the wall. This is when you need the most drive and be excited for the future.
7 years in and every single day, I’m still learning, still pushing and still feeling incredibly fortunate to work with an amazing team.
